Thats my point. There is no profit from smuggling. 1st time you are caught? your done. No more smugling. 100mil ship is useless.
Now saying do not get caught? you will sooner or later get caught. Guaranteed. Unless landing on Pirate bases,in which case your not smuggling, your trading for pirates.
well thats why we are saying to increase smuggling profit.
And I would count it that as long as you are moving cargo illegally (against the laws of any of the 5 houses -not sair or OC- and within their jurisdiction) you are smuggling.

Nope. This is still smuggling.
What you'r talking about is distribution, which can be done from pirate bases as well as from the lawful ones.
Smuggling is moving cargo to or trough one of the Houses. You don't have to land on it's capital.
And Dodike is right, it's much safer then ore hauling.
That's because the pirates these days are more organized and more greedy then the law enforcers.

Smugglers can't use 5k cargo ships. Oh yeah, also. I happen to agree with both sides now. It does suck that first time you get caught (which can be completely by accident) you get fr5'd whether you drop the cargo or not. (Yes,there are douchebags who do this.) If you run,you get blasted. If you drop the cargo, you get fr5'd. If you land, you get fr5'd or sanctioned even. There will always be someone who's going to sit in front of a planet he very well knows is a prime target for smugglers, and just lurk for fresh people to ruin their trade route with a few sentences.
Now,other side. Yes,fr5 is a legitimate inRP punishment for smuggling. For that, you can smuggle say...cardamine, to Buffalo instead of Manhattan. ( "BUT I WILL MAKE LESS MONIEZ THEN AND NO CHALLENGE!!one" - deal with it.) If you really want to get caught,go land on Manhattan. And then it'll be -your- fault you got fr5'd,noone else's.
Third point of view: I've had a cardi smuggler char for quite a while, and the lawfuls were only half of the problem. If Hackers catch you smuggling, they will most likely tax you if not under their flag. If the rogues do, same procedure. Xenos will just shoot you down. Corsairs will shoot you down. Basically anyone you meet if you're unaffiliated with them will shoot you down or rob you. So,the smuggling routes should be quite a bit more profitable.
Just my 2 cents.
Sucks to be a weight on the wrong side of the brilliance-insanity scale.
What kind of fr5 are we talking about? Reversible one to -0.9 or the evil one to -1.0? Which one is applied as a RP consequence?
If the usual fr5 procedure is to set rep to -0.9, then I find it perfectly acceptable. After all, the law enforcer did went through all the bother and invested time in gathering and posting evidence and all that. It's just normal if I find my trade being more difficult within said house till I sort my rep back up (find a respective bribe, shoot unlawful NPCs, bribe that passing Rhino to take a mission for me, etc). Tempering with identity is a nice part of smuggler's RP.
If it's to -1.0, then I'm sad and want to bite admins for allowing such absurdity. It's simply a way of saying "We win lol, go play somewhere else"
fr5 for smuggling? if you people can't drop and shoot your own cargo when its obvious that a lawful ship is heading towards you from 10k, you fail at smuggling. period.
