The issue that most people don't fully think through is when and where, and social status. If you go back to ancient Rome, for example, if you're not part of the ruling class, you're in a world of hurt. And let's face it - the middle ages really sucked. That's why the SCA tries to recreate them as they should have been, not as they were.
So thus, if this is a one way trip, you need to prepare. If you're going back to any time in the 19th or 20th century, it'd be fairly easy to have some kind of reference book already prepared, so that you can have future stocks or for that matter, sports events for wagers. Got all your immunizations up to date? Including for those things that modern medicine has already eradicated?
Going back as a simple observer, or as a world conqueror? If the latter, then depending upon the time period, adequate armament is a must.
