what the OP says appears to be based on rules - keeping rules, making rules, breaking rules.

why don t we behave like *******s? ( at least most of us ) - becuase there is something like a social conscience. - a code of behaviour.

without such a code - a community is nothing but a bunch of people. but a bunch of people doesn t make a community.

when its about rules and the power to break them...

imagine that... :

a policeman comes up to you, gives you his gun and says "you may kill one random person, no hard feelings" - yes... there are a few sick people who would enjoy it ... but most people wouldn t shoot even if they were not punished at all for it... because there is a code of behaviour.

in other words - one does not go around shooting random people dead.

so if you are a "host" ( please notice the term "host" ) of a community - you have certain responsibilities. at good parties - the "host" of the party also takes up responsibilities...

- he will ensure that no one goes dry
- he will entertain his guests
- he will partake in chats and gossip
- he will serve food and drink
- he will throw those out who are about to ruin the party for others

and all the while - he is the one owning the premises, paying for the food and drink...

Because it's a private server, and they've decided to have their own set of rules.

There is a fine line between corruption and the jobs of the Admins. They easily could, but they don't. They keep this set of rules because there are next to none they have to follow.

Very good question though.

If the administrators had a way to make the entire community behave, either no one would leave or no one would play.

Seriously now, are you going to keep at this? Because it's starting to get old.

EDIT: Lead programmer, thanks.

Retired, permanently.

Adding to it, I've always thought its because while the admins could do those things, we dont because we do hope to and strive for a general sense of fairness. This is not always black and white, and we do screw up. But we do a bit of internal policing as well - we call each other out on things that are dodgy. All in all, I think we just want to keep it real, and not be evil.

And that means not be evil as in as it says, not in the Google Sense.

Oh hi, Ben. Nomchat misses you.

I don't believe so, unlike in real life, people have the option of just simply walking away from this place if they don't like it or feel unfairly treated. In the case of real life, if the admins were dictators, then you'd probably be trapped in a country where there was little chance of escape from the slavery that you would be cast into. Simply put, the community has the option to behave, and so do the admins. Both can walk away at any point that they choose to. There's no reason to behave if you genuinely don't want to. It's just lucky for us, that the admins are good and fair people who want what's best for this place.

Just a quick word from a newcomer to the forums and the server....

... I'm really enjoying this place, and the RP in game and the interaction is worth giving up a 12 ping. In fact, I've been enjoying it enough that I loaded the game onto my netbook and have been playing on a 3G connection. Yeah, the lag sucks, but I restarted my PvP character as a miner and I'm having fun.

My point...well...I just want to thank the admins and the players for being here and creating this environment. Yeah, I've had times the last couple of weeks when I've been irked, but overall I'm having fun. Last night was one of the best RP nights I've had in since forever ago.

Thanks to all who are doing the thankless jobs. I wouldn't want to do what you do each day.
