IT'S 315 AM AND I SHOULD BE SLEEPING BUT I LOVE YOU ALL SO HERE YOU GO.
An example scenario:
I'm cruising along in my IMG Hegemon (which, of course, has 5 spaceship crew onboard for the RPs--can't run that thing just by myself, now can I?) on a trip from Dublin to Liberty, full of gold ore. The other character in this play is a Lane Hacker.
ACT I.
Scene I. California. The middle of a trade lane.
[Hacker sits by the side of a lane. Enter stage left the Miner. Hacker shoots the lane, Miner drops out]
Hacker: Oh, boy! Miner: Oh, no. Hacker: Oh, yes. Do me a favor and cut your engines?
[Miner complies.] Miner: *background* Suit up, guys, we've got trouble. Hacker: *laughs* Me, trouble? Hardly. Well, depends on you, really. Miner: You weren't supposed to hear that. Worthless mic switch. Hacker: Right then. That's a lot of ore you've got there, and freshly mined, too, I take it. What's it worth? Miner: Uh...Not sure, haven't been this way before. Five million, maybe? Hacker: *laughs* Nice try.
[Hacker pewpews the miner's shield a bit] Hacker: Care to try again? Miner: All right all right, we'll get about twenty for it. I think. Hacker: Tell me, how do you feel about Ageira? Miner: Uh...what do you mean? Hacker: The company. What do you think of them? Miner: Greedy corporation that exploits its workers to fatten the pocketbooks of the few at the top of the tree. Miner: Like all corporations. Hacker: Really now? Miner: Really. Where's the joy in working for soulless corporate talking heads when you could make a living on your own, in a ship of your own, prying your living from the lifeless rocks of the border worlds? Miner: At least the rocks don't give themselves fatty bonuses while cutting our pay. Hacker: We have a lot in common, you and I, Mr...I didn't catch your name? Miner: Minesalot. Hacker: Ah, Mr. Minesalot. Yes, a lot in common. I don't suppose I could entreat you for a donation to the worthy cause of ridding Sirius of greedy corporations like Ageira? Miner: A worthy cause indeed. What are you looking for? Hacker: Four million should go a long way. And if you throw in another two, I'll make sure the Rogues two lanes down leave you alone. Miner: Hmmm, where would the money go? That's a pretty big chunk. Hacker: I'll tell you one place that the money will go--I've got this faulty weapon actuator on one of my guns...
[Hacker pewpews from a gun] Hacker: Whoops, there it goes again. Sorry about that. Miner: Ah, I can see the necessity for that. And the Rogues up ahead won't bother me? Hacker: You have my word as a fellow man who's been slighted by corporations like Ageira. Miner: Deal.
[Miner uses /givecash Hacker 6000000] Hacker: Wise choice, Mr. Minesalot. Have a good rest of your trip.
[Miner begins moving back to the lane] Miner: Good luck with that gun!
[Exeunt stage right the Miner. Curtain.]
INTERMISSION
Of course, maybe I'm an idealist or something, but that's how I'd like to see things go. More often, they go like this:
[Hacker drops the lane, Miner booted out] Hacker: all cargo, or 20mil Miner: Uh, what exactly are you going to do with 2700 tons of gold ore? You're flying a gunboat, you can't hold more than a couple hundred.
[Hacker pewpews a bit] Hacker: PAY UP Miner: What does it matter? Either way I lose everything. Hacker: ship? Miner: That's what insurance is for. Hacker: life? Miner: I think you'll make sure I live. Murder carries a much steeper jail term than theft... Hacker: LAST CHANCE
[Miner starts thrusting]
[Hacker pewpews]
[Miner pops] Hacker: HAHA I KEEL YOU I R AWESUM AND WILL POST SCRENS ON THE FRUMZ
[Miner facepalms]
Also, it's now nearly 4am, and I no longer love you all. I now hate you all.
' Wrote:There's a difference between being greedy in-RP and being greedy OORP.
The first can result in fun RP for both parties and the pirate making some money.
The second results in one party ending up miserable and the other one making a post on the forums complaining that there's no traders or miners left.
So..the pirate can't be OORPly greedy (whatever the hell that means, not like you can buy cars with disco money), but the trader can, coz he needs his cap8 dread? I am getting the feeling: if things don't go your way, they are ruining your fun and those people should be removed.
' Wrote:Also, dividing players on pirates and traders is ridiculous because most of the players have both pirate and trader characters and pirate each other. That polite navy pilot who just saved your butt might be the very jerk that pirates you on your route. Different characters require different mindsets. That doesn't mean that somebody wants to screw with you.
That is so true...I remember when I used to pirate in NY...got tons of insults. Eventually I would get blown up and log my LN and go to Cali. All of a sudden I was a saint

In this case, the pirate player's OORP greed/sadism is just there for griefing the trader.
The trader who's saving for that cap8 dread can still enjoy themselves without preventing the pirate players from having fun.
The pirate who's being a jerk and just looking to kill people/take everything does prevent the traders from having fun.
I don't like taking toys from other people. I want you to have fun playing the game, too, so I'm not going to go out of my way to ruin your day the way some people do.

I seriously doubt there is anyone out there who just wants to ruin other people's fun. At best (or worst, if you wish) they don't care...not that it's good. Point is...even if they do ruin your fun, they don't do it on purpose, they are just trying to have fun themselves. The whole point of being a pirate is to "win" over the trader: either by getting paid or blasting him. Playing the nice pirate....I seriously don't see the point. There are other characters for that. Also, the trader who is power trading (and gets upset at a pirate) for a cap8 dread won't be any more beneficial to other people's fun. Oh lol, pirat, nau u die! You know the type...
