That's always the problem, no concern for how the pirate is making the player behind the trader feel, and instead just wanting to make money, or to troll the trader (and by doing so, trolling the player behind the trader) by making him drop all his cargo. But the pirates always either go "Olol, I'm a pirate, I'm supposed to do this!" or "olol, wuts the cost of your life?" or "Olol, ur ship costs more than 5-20 million!"
No, I am not going to pay 5-20 million to save my ship, call it OORP, but, rules < RP < reality.

I have pirated for years. Allow me to explain this to you.
90% of traders are silent and just try to run (and I kill them). Of the remaining 10%, 8% will chat to haggle you down to half your demand without roleplay (and this is Ok, I guess.). The remaining 2% pay up after roleplaying. If you were trying to make money pirating, how would you state your demands?
When I pirate, it's in roleplay, but it's not a cooperative experience. I'm there to take money from someone else. It is a competitive environment. I get competitive. I blow people up for taking a second too long. You can whine all you want to, but that's what a pirate should do. They're not nice people who have all day to shoot the breeze.
P.S. I helped an Outcast pirate a full DSE barge today for 14 million, complete with rude, impatient, inrP demands.;)
I once pirated a Barge with the help of an Outcast for quite the sum (he had a lot of ore and other cargo that was worth quite a lot!). The deal was to split 50/50, but once I got the money I ran off like a jerk, because that was my role play. What I'm saying is, if my character is a jerk, he won't be just picking on "poor" traders. I can be angry at everyone, exactly how I was. I ruined my relations with the Lane Hackers, with the Junker Congress. But I didn't care, it was fun to be that angry and greedy pirate that just wants to earn his riches.
But back to my story, non of the unlawfuls I double crossed, shot, betrayed and so on ever complained. They knew I can do it and lived with the consequences and I lived with mine (being on really bad terms with them).

Yeah, but still, there is another person playing that trader, try to remember that and not be a total jerk about it, doing so ruins the fun for him, which isn't encouraged here. You can give the "inRP, a pirate would do this" reason all day, but when the day is over, it's still just a game, and people are still here to have fun, don't ruin that fun for someone.

Well that is bs as well, since people only use RP arguments when it fits their needs. A trader will say it's perfectly acceptable for him to just want the money and silent cruise away. And it is. But on the other hand, the pirate...you know where I'm going.
Bottom line, it's up to the individual pirate's discretion, He can choose to play one way or another, but neither make him a jerk or such. If you get upset over a pirate taking 5m of your pixel credits, well...I think your problem goes well beyond the pirate.
Most decent pirates (example, LH and LR) will roleplay according to the situation and to the trader. Those who go "5milordai" are the lolwhuts who don't even read forums, thus making this thread useless. They are the same silent miners/traders and "lol pirate, die" dread captains.
I love how everyone casually seems to ignore what I said, and go back to the usual stuff of "such and such does this, so we have to do this, blah blah blah", or dismiss the fact that they could be wrong and place the blame on someone else completely.
Fact: IT'S A DANG GAME! NOT REAL LIFE! Ruining a traders day is not inRP, it's being a douche with no concern for other people! Everyone should try to RP, traders shouldn't just be silent and ignore the pirate, I have blown up plenty of them types when I was pirating myself, but at the same time I have never pirated for more than 3 million (unless I was trolololing a friend of mine's trader:D) or demanded cargo to start with.
In conclusion, everyone just needs to show some basic respect to each other, and stop the "OLOL I'M BETTER THAN YOU" mentality. You CAN RP a mean pirate, without being a complete douche to the player, despite popular belief.
