Y'know i actually got laughed at openly for asking for permission to dock on NY a while back. some guy went...
"lolz n00b, you don't have to ask permission to dock, are you someone's whipping boy or summat?"
If he had been physically near me at the time i would have removed his face with a spade.
I love rp and I think the person who said that to you is an idiot. He was clearly the noob, not you. As we all know I fly a Junker cruiser, and that is a "warship" and police don't fully trust Junkers, so if I plan to dock at Manhattan I ask for permission. It is rp and good, but the last time I asked there was so much oorp that they probably didnt see my request.
I remember once it was just me and another in a system and we talked oorp, but when someone else entered the system we grouped up and kept our oorp to group chat.
I have lots of rp ideas and some involve New York. It would be nice to actually carry them out and receive rp responses, but what hinders that is constant oorp chat that drowns out the rp that us rpers are trying to do. For example I plan to bring some Grau family convoys through, and I would give the convoy designation and ask for permission to proceed to Manhattan space, after all a Junker convoy in Manhattan space may be suspicious. I could ask and the military players could allow it or not allow it, but there is simply too much oorp at the moment for me to do more like that.
I am reminded of how one of the people on these forums has the avatar with uncle sam saying "I want you to never use oorp in system chat!" Love that Avatar! Sure there is nothing wrong with getting to know someone on a RL level, but keep it to private chat.
Now I realize there are some exceptions. Like once when I was helping someone with a transfer, I docked with Manhattan and launched again being as the server is prone to crashing and I didn't want to loose what I had. I did a message with the "//" telling all police players there I was just docking for that purpose.
One thing I really think could be different is how people ask where stuff is. One they could ask a high level player in private chat or phrase it in rp chatter. For example, One player, Harvester_3, wanted to know what SA stood for and he phrased his question as follows: "This unit requests the designation of the callsign SA" Sounded great to me, he was rping like he was a robotic unit and was still able to ask what he wanted.
Another example would be when a cruiser patrol I met was looking for a system they said, "This is cruiser Scornstar requesting the coordinates to the ****** system." I can't remember the system name.
Sometimes people say, "Where can I get a good ship for xxxx amount of credits?" First off, I like the challeng of exploring on my own...after all it is discovery, not get-the-locations-from-everyone-for-everything, but some don't. Personally I think it would sound better and more rpish to say something like, "Would someone be willing to upload the coordinates of a shipyard that would be able to build me a freighter for a very good price?"
Then someone could respond by saying something like "Planet Hamburg on the Hamburg system produces a very nice freighter and can build it for you for under one million."
To me I think stuff like that just sounds better and it isnt oorp then, at least I don't think.
Anyways to recap.
1)That guy is the noob, you are not.
2)OORP chatter like there were screenshots posted of is just dumb and has no place here.
3)That OORP hinders good rp that myself and many others wish to do here.
4)That avatar is awesome!
5)There may be a few times oorp is system chat is needed, but it is not often that it is.
6)Much can be phrased in more rpish terms.
