Well one of the lectures involved inverse modelling of radiation transfer. Don't you think its kind of off topic?

I did mention that in the initial question, yes. Although perhaps we could work on modelling this society we have here instead.

The way I see the issue, is as follows. There are those who wish to play the game in a manner which is not wildly chaotic... This involves listening. There are those who wish to not listen to anyone but their own impulses.

That is fine.

When people wish to take the non chaotic route, there is a structure in place to facilitate that. You could call it a service, if you want to. It is in place to provide a path towards cooperation, dialogue, mutual understanding and so on. There are faults and flaws within it, and occasionally messages get mixed up. When people arrive, and say they wish to form a part of this collective, they are welcome to do so. They may have as much or as little involvement in that process as they wish.

Some may wish to join the official factions.

These people apply to join, and provided they meet a certain threshold understanding of the rules and roleplay, they will be accepted into the official faction of their choosing, and by applying agree to follow a certain standard of behaviour.

Some may wish to not join the official faction but to cooperate with it.

These people often wish to immediately fly a larger ship, without climbing up the ranks of an official faction first. That is fine. They are more than welcome to do so. These people will choose to listen to the official faction's chain of command, and to behave in a manner which is in-line with what the official faction believes to be gentlemanly conduct. This gentlemanly conduct is an oorp affair. It is the player's moral or ethical judgement.

Some may wish to not join the official faction and not cooperate with it.

These people are often those who wish to immediately fly a larger ship, and could not give a monkeys about much aside from their own judgement. They are welcome to behave as they please, provided it falls within the rules of the server, and does not impinge on those who choose to identify with a specific behavioural code. If members of the official factions, or the groups who choose to listen to the official factions find that others are regarding them in a bad light as a result of the actions of the non cooperative individual, often the official faction or the groups which allign themselves with it, will react in a negative fashion. If the official faction and groups/individuals who allign with the official faction do not perceive a non-cooperative individual to be harming anyone's gameplay experience, then they will continue as they please without any interference from the official faction or groups/individuals who allign with the official faction.

Where you have a group who idenfity themselves as "we" and a number of individuals who identify themselves as "I" you find that the weight of opinion often falls with the "we" even if the total number of people goes something along the lines of...

We: 45 people.
I: 1 person
I: 1 person
... and so on until you have 46 people who seperately identify themselves as "I".

Those 45 people having some form of governance or authority is not wrong. It is the majority opinion, as the other opinions are not as a unified voice.

Well obviously you changed your behavior towards indies yesterday, or that would have worked every day.

So the only thing you managed to prove is that it actually IS possible to solve the problem in the way that Anaximander and me said.

There has been no change in behaviour. The only difference was early warning, and promptly getting people in group. The indies were as cooperative as always, just they were not ignorant to the threat this time around.

The interaction between faction and indy was the same as always. In other words, we asked them to RV at a certain location (and they did, as always)... And because more people were aware in good time, nobody got killed as they undocked from a station or jumped into a system.

If you wish, you can be part of this. But you are unaware of the relationship between indy and official faction, otherwise you would not hold the opinion you hold. But like I said... You are taking any opportunity you can to throw mud. That's fine... It's no skin off my nose if you wish to do that... But uninformed opinions tend to spread like a nasty rash, if the person spouting them is vocal enough...
