I'm a bit unsure about the rock with engines but I agree that it shouldn't look shiny and new.
The design I have in my head is two prison liners welded together to create a platform with the habitation areas, food domes and hangars bolted on to it. Think like the inside of the blood dragons asteroid base but on top of two liners, that kind of thing.
