He just looked at her after hearing what she said. At first, he froze as her fingers interlocked with his but when she squeezed his hand, he returned it. He was again speechless for a moment but his gaze never left her and his soft smile remained.
He turned, there hands still together, wanting to at least face her.
Was it the alcohol? Was it loneliness or was it simply that he was fighting off the fact that he was really starting to like her as more than a business associate and didn't dare cross that line. His mouth opened to say something but nothing came out. I don't want to screw this up he thought to himself.
He just stood looking her over. His other had touched the hair he had brushed earlier that evening, even moving some aside to look into her eye. Again, he went to say something but couldn't. It might unintentionally hurt or maybe deepen feelings. Either way, there would be no going back and it frightened him.
