If you idea is supposedly meant to help new players, I think you might have missed a relatively large issue.
How are new players whose first death on the server going to react when they are kicked out of the server with a ban message? They will of course attempt to reconnect and will see the "You are banned" message displayed. What will this new player think?
I know that if I was in that situation, I would probably not bother coming back. I would think it was ridiculous to be banned for a simple death in a space arcade shooter and not waste my time.
