The 1st Maltese Legion is an independent, volunteer-based union of patriotic Maltese officers, pilots, and soldiers. The Legion was formed out of the volunteer “Galicia” squadron at the very beginning of 824 A.S. The mission statement of the Legion was published by well-known Maltese commander Ezio Aquila based on a conceptual framework prepared by Rafael Saelices and Enma Loyola; it highlit many major perceived problems of Maltese society, such as institutionalized corruption and traditional plutocratic institutions, which the Legion sees as inefficient and detrimental to national interests. In one way or another, most of the military commanders were involved in the Maltese political and economic games. The prevailing state of both internal and external affairs was absolutely unacceptable.
Realizing that, in the current situation, to oppose the plutocracy politically or economically would only further entrench it, the Legion has focused on securing the Nación’s external borders. While the small forces of the Legion focus entirely on the most critical frontlines of Maltese defense, the Legion suffers from a chronic lack of supplies and military equipment; regardless, Legionnaires are bound to refuse any help from wealthy Maltese families and cartels, so as to prevent the Legion from falling into any sort of dependence upon the very powers they are ideologically opposed to.
Due to conditions of the movement, the models of ships and equipment found in use are quite diverse. Most of the gear in the Legion is the personal property of the pilots using it, which often leads to problems with technical support. In some units, ship maintenance is up to the pilots themselves and centralized repair centers barely exist. Payroll in general is also rather situational and small; in general, command is not able to provide proper supplies, whether financial or technical. Some units found themselves on the brink of survival, though only a few have ever left the Legion’s ranks. Slowly, but surely, piracy has become the main source of income for the most of the Legion’s ranks. Some officers, with their origins in noble families, are able to provide some supplies to their units, but, due to the Legion's aforementioned tendency to mistrust the oligarchy, this is often not evaluated to be a positive phenomenon. The Legion cooperates closely with the Junkers, who are usually able to provide most of the needed parts and equipment at reasonable prices.
The combat operations of the Legion mainly consist of textbook partisan warfare. Using the cover of endless asteroid and gas fields, Legion fighter and bomber wings attack suddenly and decisively; after doing as much damage they can to defending side, Legionaries utilize the same fields to escape. The number of larger ships, as well as their frequency of use, is very limited due to technical issues, and they are not used except in urgent situations. Regional units in the Taus, Sigmas, Omicrons and in House space have their own specific tactics and tricks, but all of them have the above in common.
The Legion's military and ideological leaders are different, but work side by side, ultimately sharing the same point of view. Due to the nationalistic essence of the Legion, non-Maltese are not permitted to attain any high rank in this organization. Legionnaires value the love and loyalty to Malta held by some foreign volunteers, but they never trust them as they would trust one of their own. Neither is there any reason to allow foreigners to gain influence; Malta has absolutely no shortage of experienced military specialists.
The pilots and leaders of the Legion refuse, for the most part, to take any part in political and economic life of Malta. Dedicated to combating external threats, they view their devotion as nothing less than their patriotic duty, and involvement in civilian life as an undesirable distraction. However, the Legion is not apathetic, and has its own point of view on how rebuild the beloved Nación in a completely new way. From their point of view, it is impossible to build up the Nación properly until its enemies are neutralized and the Nación is geopolitically secure. In addition, the Legion holds that at the current juncture, any peaceful change of the Nación's organization would be nearly impossible. Killing other Maltese, however, even for the cause of saving the Nación, is out of the question.
Faction Goals
