It's mainly popular culture influencing the naming scheme. For instance, Discovery is still really bad with naming the shipclasses it generates, especially when it comes to Rheinland. The Battleship is called Bismarck, the Battlecruiser is the Tirpitz. Even worse, the name for Rheinland's Flak-Gun is, I shit you not, Acht-Acht (88), referring to the legendary Flak/Pak/Kwk 43 in WWII. I mean seriously? Bismarck and Tirpitz I understand, but 88? Are you trying to tell me that the Rheinlanders couldn't come up with a better name for their Flak Gun than the name of a gun that was used in a war that is probably forgotten by now, over a milennium back, 800 LY away? Everything needs to be stereotypically german, and the fascination the Nazis had with norse mythology has certainly played a role in identifying 'german/rheinlandic' with norse mythology.
Now that's not necessarily a bad thing. After all, Vanilla didn't do much to prevent stereotypes (Luger for Bundschuh guns. My arse.), but it would still be nice to see a bit of reminiscing.
