It never seemed to stop raining on New London, but Michael thought it suited the city well - the water-soaked streets were prettier this way. As he pushed the heavy door of the recruitment office open, he remembered a time when he was too small to open this door; and how his father always had to help him through. The officer behind the desk, a wiry-framed gentleman glanced up from his paperwork, noticing Michael and offering a practiced smile.
"What can I do for you, sir?" The gentleman spoke with a soft Bretonian accent, with the refinement of an upperclassmen. Michael approached the desk, replying quickly - slightly embarrassed by his more countrymen contralto.
"I'm here to join the Armed Forces. I was told this was the place to do it?" The officer nodded briefly, silently removing a few sheets of paper from a folder beneath his desk; sliding it over the counter. He pointed to the waiting space, flashing another weak smile. Michael nodded, taking a seat and beginning to fill out the form.

Short biography:
"As a boy, I lived on Cambridge with my parents. We lived a middle-class life, on the outskirts of the city and away from the wealthy districts. I went to a good school, and spent my youth in the Air Scouts. But, when I was around 17, my father was reported KIA during a skirmish. His ship was torn to shreds by battleship lasers, they said. I refused to leave the house for a month, barely scraping through the rest of school. My mother was inconsolable, eventually... Voluntarily moving on from this world after the money ran dry. The pension my father had been able to raise had run out weeks before her passing, so I had to start looking for alternatives. In this time, I completed a Bachelor's in Engineering and began looking for a proper job with a mining firm. But the loss of my mother... I couldn't. Not anymore, there was nothing left to work for. All I have is my nation now, and I wish to preserve it however I can."
