Okay, let's write something a bit more eloquent now that I am properly awake.
I'll be the first to admit that I absolutely HATE a lot of names I've seen in the game so far in the roughly two months I'm back, and I'm all for trying to raise the standards a bit. It's off putting and destroyes the immersion I have (however little this mod offers) when I see characters like Eearhat_1, Andy_The_Old_Git(FL) or the ones from this post.
But going after Doc? First thing first, I'd argue it's not even pop-culture reference but historical one, since I doubt anyone who's not at least a bit into "wild west" and westerns would know about that character. It's also not a pop-culture invented character but again a historical person. And, to support Mel above me, Doc have made this character entirely his own. The only thing the "historical" Doc has in common with our Doc is the fact both are doctors. Our Doc is not a gambler and gunfighter, instead he is a well known leader of an organisation I'd compare to Doctors Without Borders, not to mention he has years of RP on the server behind him.
I'm all for clamping down on downright imports, memes and popculture invented characters, but THIS is not it. Even real life laws have to be considered with context in mind, thay cannot be applied blindly and without a human input, which is what you're doing right now.
Do you even realise what are you doing to the community? My faction have been discussing a possible name for the Bustard we want to use, and one of the names suggested was Drake's.Fortune, which came up through a discussion that went through several jumps from my suggesting Fernão de Magalhães (I was going for a explorer and we operate from Magellan system) after asking on discord if historical / mytholgical names are ok. Someone suggested Ferdinand Magellan so we don't sound hispanic and eventualy Drake's.Fortune came up due to someone suggesting to take inspiration from english explorers (Sir Francis Drake) instead, since the faction has roots in bretonia.
We're discussing it a bit when suddenly someone reminded us that's the name of one of the Uncharted games. Now before the warning to Doc, I wouldn't even think about it twice. I mean, the game is named after the historical figure, same as the suggested name for the ship. But now? A legitimely nice name with a good ring to it, inspired by a historical figure, and I'm still thinking heavily if we can use it or not, just because the name appeared once in pop-culture.
Is this the environement you want to create?
Edit:// Quick addition... you know what you succeeded in by this btw? Making not want to play the game, because I simply don't know when something like this comes and slaps one or the other of my characters, because I had the gall to name them after a real life location.
