Don't be afraid to ask traders to convoy up. A good chunk of them will be willing to let a newbie hang around for protection and learning.

If you happen to be a good pilot, you can try piracy too. Managed to get 15 million to start off a character in a few days through pirating in a Starflier. It can be done.
