Yeah... the Silver field is where most people start out. It's tedious, but it does work. After that you trade, which is boringly monotonous, however, it will work.
The NPC's though are stupidly tough - as marburg said, you're best to stick around Liberty, or you can get some higher level players to partner up with you to do missions.
