Well, ship upkeep, upgrades, resupply, and because not everybody wants to be a barge pusher. Heck, the price is part of the rp. Not even cops protect people for free.
Exactly. If you die, do you know how much it costs to replentish nuke/screamer mines, enhanced countermeasures and train disruptors? Not to mention the fact that the mod isn't exactly stable right now - new equipment could be added any moment. You need a solid buffer of cash to be on the safe side.
Besides, I can fund ships easily off my Buccaneer (lolrony: I set up my escort on piracy money), so why not on my escort with enough work?
Regadless, the issue isn't with the amount escorts are charging. The issue is with the fact you can talk/advertise at (not to) a trader, and they'll 8 times out of 10 either ignore you or turn you down. That's telling them they can set the price, as well.
Plus, an escort is there for multiple reasons. 1) The obvious - to make sure you don't encounter any pirates. 2) To make sure you're safe if you do encounter pirates. 3) To help pass the time quicker; you're a player full of interactions and RP. Trading goes so much quicker when you're talking to someone, or you're in a convoy.
