no projectiles are really scary... it's hard to make scary in a game. Scary isn't watching a bunch of brightly coloured laser beams fly passed your ship, it's realising that power cell you just pulled out of the wall released a bunch of Metroids, and now you have to back track passed them all while they try to eat your face.
