Untagged Factions

I'd have to say that after reading the points made here, I'm for people going sans-tag when required by RP, such as Wilde, LSF, MI6, BDM, Kempeitai, or other special cases. For the cases I mentioned it's because they are undercover, and making them tag would be like 007 wearing a nametag when he goes to galas that says "Hello, my name is James Bond"

As for the "it's so people can find you to interact" issue, it's not too hard to find people that aren't tagged. Sure, it takes a bit more effort, but how hard is it for someone to sort the player list by system and look through the target faction's ZoI and make note of any names that look particularly promising?
Really, how hard is it to find Keepers if you really want to shoot some squishies? "hmm, there's someone in New York/Alaska/Omicron-XXX with a weird sounding name, let's check that out, they're either nomad or SRP, and probably hostile either way!" (Before anyone gets mad at me, I don't even have any characters that fly through NY if I can at all help it, this is theoretical)

I think people should ask The Joker if they have any questions about getting hunted for tagging, he doesn't technically "tag", but I guarantee that for a few months there (and probably still now) every time he logged on at least one person in some official faction saw it on the playerlist and raised an alarm in a skype chat somewhere. It just happens when your name is well known, which will happen as soon as you start interacting with a lot of people on a regular basis. I could name off at least 10 untagged or indie players and their affiliation and/or ship without needing to think hard or even consulting my log of pirate encounters.



However, the issue with a faction being flagged for inactivity because of being untagged is dangerous, and because of that I might even propose that official factions should have to keep their status post up to date with a list of faction ships that aren't tagged so Cannon could easily append that to the SQL query. That way the choice to tag is still up to the faction leaders, and the admins can still use that tool.
