Well it is good idea, and actually it should work like that but with the currnet routes then nobody will smuggle since it is not profitable enough. The second point is that there is no difference from single-player if you avoid the interactions with other players at all coast, part of the fun in smuggling is that someone tries to catch you.
I am all for blocked/harder to access jump-gates and lines for the smugglers but they should receive better payment then the casual trading since the trip is much longer that way.

Well depends on the personal view actually, I agree with you but clear admin ruling will be better.
