Didn't the original developers of Freelancer intend for the conflict to be based in the Sigma systems? There are plenty of references to this. If you read rumors on Omicron Alpha and Omicron Gamma, many of them state that the conflict is based on smuggling competition. The cardamine and artifact smuggling routes both pass through the Sigma systems and the Bretonian systems, so naturally, the Outcasts and the Corsairs will be competing for business in these two regions. The buyers of their cargo will only take one or the other, but not both. Therefore, whoever controls these two regions gains dominance over the primary smuggling routes, which is why the Outcasts and the Corsairs are fighting so intensely - to control the best smuggling routes in Sirius.
There are news reports that reflect the territorial conflict between the Outcasts and the Corsairs. They also mention that outside of this conflict, there is no intrinsic hatred between the two groups. In fact, there have been reports that some Corsairs and Outcasts have been having romantic relationships with each other. Just look at these news reports:
Also, neither of the two groups know anything about the Omicron Alpha-Omicron Theta jump hole. Even your ship's scanner will recognize it as an unknown object when you approach it and it will not be labeled on your navigation map (I know this is true when you approach it from the Omicron Theta side, but I can't remember if the same is also true if you approach it from the Omicron Alpha side). The jump hole was probably meant for the player rather than the two factions. Otherwise you would see Corsairs attacking Omicron Alpha and Outcasts attacking Omicron Gamma from Omicron Theta.
I'm sure that I'm not alone when I say that the conflict needs to return to the Sigma systems. This mod was originally designed to keep as much of the original ideas in the game as possible. Having the Corsairs and the Outcasts wage war on each other in Omicron Eta and Omicron Theta does not reflect this. The Corsairs and the Outcasts show no desire to fight apart from establishing their dominance over the smuggling routes. Therefore, I, and many others in the community, think it would be best if the Omicron Eta system and the Omicron Alpha-Omicron Theta jump hole were removed from the mod. Not only would we return to Freelancer's roots, but activity would also return to the Sigma and the Bretonian systems.
