Fragile and completely unnecessary and decorative spikes that break ship proportions. It feels like came directly from some anime cartoon. Like said - try with boxes first. Keep your ship structure homogeneous, aim for solid look where purpose comes first and style follows it. Keep ship proportions tight.
Take some patience. Nothing comes out easy, especially when working within boundaries of existing style. So naturally you have to adapt to it, learn new techniques, change old ones in favor of those that will benefit the different approach. Neither anime (spiky, excessively detailed) nor Pixar (deformed, oversmoothed) movies would fit here. Your best inspiration is the game itself.

We all have our artistic and stylistic preferences, myself too, though that doesn't mean that we should make our models as we see fit without paying attention to how things are done in game. There is a good reason for them to be made and look like that. We are used to this style, breaking it any further would only be harmful to consistency and solidity of the game world. The point is that custom ships have to fit existing game style and look natural around others. Useful tip: put vanilla ship models near your ship, it can often reveal issues and you can check against them to see how fitting your work it.
I know. Just I'm drawing up another ship. Sad to think i was going to do a whole new line of ships for Liberty LPI , LSF, LNS. And so on. I am even afraid to present my Liner design...well my brothers Liner design....
It's not terrible different from the Lux Liner abit bigger and ....wait....darn....it's abit smoother... :dry:ah....

Start with rough lines. Take a piece of paper, a pencil and start making drawing for top view and side views. Very very rough, because all you need at the beginning is to define proportions for your ship, i.e. how much space you will give to main hull, how much area wings will cover, etc. Defining proportions is very important part in ship design. Later they can change when you are modeling it, but overall the feel of shapes should remain the same. Excessive smoothing and curves lead to Pixar-like style, very cartoonish.
the first design is the only viable one, and only due to its slight ressemblance with an havoc, which I strongly dislike... try making bulkier stuffs, its usually the word for FL ship.
