Also, like Dab, I didn't get any (I had a disconnection some 10-15 minutes earlier, but because of known probs) and people, when saying that you had lag before the server crashed it happens (A LOT) that the game shows the red icon for a minute (60 sec) and then you get disconnected, so don't count the last minute of "red lag" before the disconnect, I think it may help solving the problem. Wolf, correct me if I'm wrong.
If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God? - from 'Nightfall' by I. Asimov The Outcasts consider Siniestre Nube a sacred place for several reasons. Early explorers discovered a jumphole within the depths of the cloud that leads to a strange world of ringed stars and strange craft. All ships in the burrial ground are placed facing that hole to honor the Alien Spirits. - An Outcast rumor

Okay.. let me explain how the internet and network servers operate.
1) Client connects to the server ane expects a response. Games work the same way. They won't disconnect you until it actually NOTICES it can't get a reply.
2) When client doesn't get a response, it'll try pinging the server. if no response, disconnect.
3) Servers don't crash randomly like you people keep saying. As a server admin, it does irritate me when people use the word "crash" so often when it's a simple concept of server being shut down or a network issue. there's a HUGE and MAJOR difference in definitions.
In Freelancer (and i have truely tested this), I've shut my server down for no apparent reason while I was connected to it (Local LAN server, not the actual Discovery box). Guess what? Yellow icon for about a min, then red... then disconnect.
That's what happens people, when the server gets shut down with nowarning (Power, network, whatever). What you're seeing is a time-lag from the time the server shuts down til the time the client realizes this.
That simple folks. The only crashes we've ever noticed are during maintenance. If the server gets shut down thanks to power, it's not a crash. it's a simple shut down with no warning.
Does any of this make sense? If not, go take Computing on the Internet 101 again.

Well I had bad lag (Teleporting NPC's and the yellow lag icon, sometimes red) for about half an hour before the server shut down without warning(<= I'm learning already :) )
But as most people didn't have that lag, iy must be caused by something at my end.
I use a router for my internet connection so maybe that increases lag a bit.
Also up here in Scotland i doubt the broadband has more than the minimum required bandwith.
It is not until Recently that I have STOPPED getting Lag.... When I first started playing discovery, I couldnt even log on first time because of lag.
But now, in almost all big fights with NPC's i'm lag free... so I belive that this is somewhere at the Clients end. Either that or the server has picked out favorite's :P(and put me there by mistake)
Been on recently. I havn't noticed any lag when flying but the chat messages were
taking a couple of seconds or longer to reach the board. Don't know if this helps ...
Usually a sign for me that there is lag ...

I also use a router. It might depend on the company who created the router, and the performance. I have a linksys router and its connected to Insight broadband, and I almost never have lag.
It might also be your connection to the router. Most of the time I play at my computer desk as its easier than flying using a wireless, ball-less mouse on a couch (though it actual does work... At least it proves $60 mouses are good :D ). I usually have Excellent connection (goes from none, fair, good, great, excellent), but if I have good or lower I usually have lag.
