My oldest (and first) character on the server still flies a Firefly.
Freelancer ID with Freelancer IFF. Go anywhere, do anything - for fun, I like to haul food to Crete, then take a load of artifacts to Manhattan - then haul food back. You can (sometimes) get interesting RP along the way.
Or I'll haul pineal amulets for the Zoners, so they can do their own worshiping thing. I've hauled RP cargo for many different peoples that posted they needed help on the forums delivering assorted stuff, been pirated, helped pirate, and in general had a great time with him.
And realize that's only one character I have. You get Freelancer Account Manager, you can have multiple accounts, with 5 characters each. So I have my BHG account, with a Mako, a Thresher, and a bomber on it. I have my Indie account, where my Freelancer is, along with my Zoner Dreadnought and my recently created pirate. I have my Nomad account, where I have my two K'Hara ships. I have my police ship account, where I have my three different house police force ships. And I have my OTHER BHG account, where I have my other 5 assorted Core and hunter pilots.
Two weeks? I'm not the longest time player on here by far, and I've been on here for more than 5 years. There's a LOT to do out here.

All of these posts give good advice, and I know how strange it can be to adapt to a RP-centered game. The best advice I could give you is if you think you're ready for something different sign up for a faction. I remember when I first started (I had another Forum account before this one), I was a Independent Zoner Trader that barely knew anything about the game and hardly looked at the Forum. One day, I met a Corsair who was apart of the Brotherhood (they're extinct I think). This may be strange to hear, but his RP was outstanding at the time to me, and I started to think differently about what this game was about. I started to see the endless possibilities of what you could do when you mix RP creativity with what's available in this game. I remember that week I started to research that faction and I actually felt proud when I was approved in the recruitment process. Immediately, I met new people, and felt a sense of belonging. I got to do interesting RP patrols, like being bombarded by Nomads and the Outcasts at once, and I got to participate with the creation of the Faction's history and disputes.
For what it's worth, it was an experience that led me to eventually create my own faction. In 2009 (still can't believe it's been 4 years), I created Universal Shipping Incorporated. I focused on exploiting on the endless possiblities of RPing within a great Trading Faction (like paying members to RP on the forums and in game, or even setting up a Casino vessel that not only had gambling, but hosted many events such as racing or jousting). So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you think you've experienced all that you can with Freelancer... Try something new. Try joining a faction where you can feel apart of, and you'll see this game as so much more than what it seems at face value.
Edit: Forgot I was on the USI account (oops). Name's Michael Trenton (Forum ID: Tenspot68).
Are you at the stage, where if you hear the repetetive Trade Lane sound one more time you might just flip out? Make a new Character, throw some credits on it with the /givecash command. Get yourself a nice fighter or gun boat. I park mine out in New Hampshire and do the hardest missions I can. That helps me out when there is low player population or I am generally just bored. Some systems have harder mission than others.
You can also take that ship to Conneticut and practice PvP. The /conn command while you are docked on a station and it will get you there.

What do people do besides the obvious pirating to keep happy and engaged in the game ?
Besides that, what the others said, here my 2 cent.
Restrict and specialize your characters ( to a ship (
preferrable small), to a region, to commodities, to
a corporation, to a behaviour and so on). Find a place
where it lives, aside from flying around. Find some
simple or cool stories, that you can share with others.
Often it is just some simple fact, that makes your character
more realistic.
Try closed economy characters and see where they go.
Try playing in a faction.
Join raids.

Thanks, it was a serious question and I got serious answers.
I have to start with the RPing, which I don't mind but not sure if I can handle this unlimited sandbox. I used to be more restricted in games like Eve (which I played a year somewhere in 2008 before it got too addicted grin).
I am a bit fearful of going to other sectors since I have already met and paid pirates in the basic Brit and Liberty space. Or I suddenly see some unknown red player that seems to fly to me with a high velocity so I just try to hit cruise and dock a random tradelane to get away.
I know sometimes over 100 people are online, but in Liberty space I often feel alone (except for the occasional silent meeting with another trader or above mentioned pirate).
I know I can buy a pirate ship and probably be bad with it (I never used engine kill / jousting, I just make circles until the enemy is in my sights) and that makes me think I need more heaps of credits before I want to try that area.
I did a lot of killing missions in Freelancer vanilla single player version and I like those. Here I skipped them except 3 or 4 since the money is meaningless compared to trading (and some AI enemies ARE tough).
Yet owning a Cruiser or something big sounds fun, swatting flies always boosts ones ego (for a while).
The strange thing is that I am more or less 'used' or even 'hooked' to the 'level-up' thing but it isn't here since this is basically a classic game. No nescessary XP points for killing enemies over and over again, no requirements to go on a mission in a sector 6 hours flying away. It's good .. and it's bad. I miss the framework of me growing as a player.
Perhaps it's why I never liked AD&D 'at home' but I loved playing WoW (yeah guilty) since the beta in 2004. (And before that Diablo, Quake, Unreal Tournament).
I love MMO's (The aforementioned WoW, EVE, Warhammer, Age of Conan, several smaller free to play games) so I want to meet humans in space, not stupid scripted AI. I love the sci-fi environment ; being a big fan of Heinlein, Asimov, A.C. Clarke, F. Herbert, having read most iof their books, at young age and still now. Short stories, written in the interbellum up to modern stuff (from '60s to now).
So I know the 'life in space' , the subjects/topics/issues. From politics to the science. Yet I am not really a writer or roleplayer pur sang, but I do want to fit it.
I guess I have to dive a bit deeper into the sub-games in this game, but in a way they're a bit hard to find
Most of this game is about how you interact with other players, whether it's through cooperative actions in mining, convoying goods, policing (if you're lawful), pirating (if you're unlawful), smuggling, wreck-hunting, bounty-hunting, or just exploring all the systems you can find (oh...the joys of discovering your first guard-system in a small fighter).

Don't be fooled into thinking that being in a larger ship will guarantee your safety from the "flies." Some of those flies have nova torpedoes and SNACs.
But being in a faction will certainly give you a deeper involvement into the sociopolitical landscape of the game. I'd advise you to look into them a bit and see which one might suit you....except Zoners.
Explore all sirius, join lawfull faction, make a full rep to them, be a traitor and change sides , get arrested, be freed and flee to other region of sitius join as even other major house spy, be a double agent, get infected by nomads, then get retired and have your own base, create new faction.
That was example of one character story.

well if you want to bend over.. then i would.. but i prefer Kruger
anyways it depends on what you like more.. some like the combination of mining/ trading a lot.. Do not forget with every mining faction also enemies will come so you will need to pay them or well fight or run from them to make sure your cargo is safe.
If you prefer to roleplay i would join some more serious RP factions. Not saying that the trading factions are bad RP ones.. but usually it goes about contracts. And its within my eyes very limited, still fun, but limited.
