Repair turrets vs. Trade bots/batts

If we could get rid of bot trading once and for all, repships would have their infinite bot supply replaced with a repair turret as they should have long ago.

Repairing more than bots hold allows - should be very exclusive (and reserved as exclusive service to repair ship only). Repair ship would be most important ship in all that mess, but not easy to protect. It would bring FLs to offer their repair services in battles, maybe even some new repair ship faction. More RP.

Only reason is I would rather repship isn't made basically redundant when a battleship trading bots will be much better than a repair gun. That's why I'd rather wait.

Better redundant than still ruining fights, no? Don't leave something so broken in game while you wait for somebody to come along out of no where and fix it for you. Overall balance would be better with a useless repair ship than repair ships being left as they are.

I tried to find a way to do this, however at this time it is technically impossible unless some skilled coder comes forward and delivers us a plugin. I'd be first to shove it into the repository, since it creates many, many balance issues in group fights.

Ehm... it works on Discovery of Discovery that is running our mod.
Restart with the base builder, and you have the guns. They drop shields and repair hull once the shielding is dropped. Of course balancing it will be a pain, but you confuse me because I interpret your words as if you said "it is technically not possible to have repair turrets".

Aside from that, I can't be the only one that finds freighter-sized ships repairing battleships in the thick of a battle just a bit silly in the first place.

I don't mean the repair gun, that's easy to do. I mean disabling bot/bat trading.

Anyway we can try and play around with a repair gun for an upcoming update, but I just want to advise you that repair ships will become basically worthless (unless the repair gun is heavily op, see below) until such a point when bot/bat trading is eliminated.

Also there is another issue: creating a gun that will repair capships at a decent rate without allowing fighters to get instantly recharged an infinite number of times. Remember that negative damage will still be fixed against any kind of ship types, so if we lets say give it 30k repair rate per second (which would be reasonable in terms of capship repair), one zap of the repair gun will instarepair a fighter (and probably most bombers) from almost nothing, and so rep ships become the replacement for running away to reload in battle (save maybe for equipment damage). If we tune that down to a reasonable degree for fighters, it will not be of any use to caps and so on. I'm not sure yet how to do this in such a way that will make the repair ship a useful tool in battle, but not actually OP, feel free to submit suggestions.

I'm not sure yet how to do this in such a way that will make the repair ship a useful tool in battle, but not actually OP, feel free to submit suggestions.

Fixed forward gun (like the LSC one) with low speed and short range. So both the fighter and the repair ship will have to sit still. Will make hitting snubs engaged in a fight somewhat problematic, while hitting a cap will still be easy.
The problem is still there if the repair ship is a few K away and the fighters run to it.

Well after a short talk with Durandal (who basically suggested just that) the idea is basically to create a new model that will be a bit larger than current repship, give it a repair fwd gun with limited range, overall medium transport stats and a very good strafe ability. This will allow it to keep close to caps and strafe away from incoming fire from other caps, while also being vulnerable to fighters/bombers.

Not that bad of an idea, but feel free to poke holes at it.

last time it was tried it had a tendency to blow up ships for no apparent reason and cause server crashes.

If you can fix that hole, sure it'd be a great idea.
