I had it twice now, in the very few times where I flew in a fighter through lanes to another place in space.
Now, flying through lanes is boring, so I tend to do it in window mode, tabbing to other stuff and doing that while keeping FL still visible in the "background". Hooray for two screens and all.
Anyway, twice now, in the short time I had something in front of FL for, seriously, just a few seconds (10-15 seconds), I was dead, killed by NPCs, when I got back. And it was not in super hostile space. The last time I, flying an IMG snub, was killed at South Shields, just after exiting the lanes. Why? Because I happened to be hostile to GRN, who happen to have patrols spawning around that base (btw...why? - There are also Council patrols.).
I mean sure, "if you go afk, don't expect to survive" and blah, but I was around, just not watching for a FEW seconds.
Makes me wonder how you expect pirates to survive at a lane in snubs without getting annihilated by NPCs.
I'm all for heavy NPCs keeping fights away from certain places like Manhattan or Norfolk or other main places in capital systems / important places in other systems, but overall the NPCs shouldn't have a massive impact on gameplay overall. A "bit less heavy turrets" on caps and GBs and less firepower (especially less anti-shield guns) on snubs and such...But heh, it seems like a lot of work would or will have to be reverse or redone to make that happen.
At the moment I consider NPCs to be too strong though.

I do this alll the time.
I don't encounter any problems unless I fly through guard systems, gallia or house space with full hostile rep counters...
And even then.
I mean, heck, if I'm trading, I don't seem to take damage from npcs.
Did you do restart/beginner and not upgrade your shield at some point or something?
I'm flying an armored transport. Enemies don't even dent my shield (which is effectively the same as all transports, like, say, the gull)
And I do it in the middle of hessian/corsair space.
Could be worse, I was testing out mining rates in Humbolt to post here and so doing my small part to help fix the mining mod. When I get jumped by 5 Xeno Eagle NPCs. Obviously they tore my Hegemon apart. Could only fire up to 4 transport turrets in any direction at once after all. QQ
Solo mining has become a challenge, if you want to keep it positive. Had 5 OC Rapiers spawn on my Annapurna while gathering the data and if I had not fought back for real, they would have killed me. I am yet undecided whether I like that or not.
Dunno, I'm complaining over all/in general. These things need to tone down their aggression. Following me for 100k!? Come on. I don't even get a chance to fight the players because the NPCs keep me going in one single direction the whole time.

I was flying an Eagle with Champion Class 10 HF shield and AU 8, x2.5.
Being fired at by 7 fighters - 3 LFs, 4 VHFs (that's what spawned the second time I went there) - a VHF dies in a very short time, especially when those NPCs just focus on you...
LFs have been buffed with better cores and harsher guns to compete with the current bomber/VHF meta.
To give people options.
You've got 7 npc fighters+possibly players firing on you?
You ain't gawd.
You ain't cheesus.
Even in vanilla, 4 enemies could be a hassle towards endgame.
Make sure you're using a shiled that isn't countered by their guns.
Gravitron shields are crud against lasers I believe, which are common guns in liberty, for instance. (that would be the champion shield, if I remember right)
Now add in the fact that NPCs can fire without worrying about powercores because they're not quite as good pilots as people.
Now take in account that LF fighters really hurt right now..
3 LFs against a person who isn't able to deal with them quickly or dodge properly?
You might have trouble.
It isn't the npcs that are the problem.
We're just not supermen anymore.
