Well... If multiple versions of the gun are balanced for different shipclasses, (slow projectiles for caps with high repair, fast projectiles for fighters with low repair) it could work nicely. Not to mention you can always take out the rapirship:P
Sounds very interesting, one of those posts that seem impossible until you think of it. Think if we were to do this the repairship might be alot more popular, Example ( 10 repairships, 4 fighters and a BS) might rule the whole system. And if its giving you bot/bats there is always the chance (although a stupid way to do it) people would keep making bats/bots for cash.
If we ever have it so we can dock on other people, we need to figure many things out, what if the Large player logs out after you dock? What if you undock during system transfer? what if the large ship gets blown up? minefield? Docked at planets? Armaddas of ships hidden in one? What equipment (if any) would the player sell? Would there be a way to exploit that?
Lots of questions and at this point not many answers, though its nice to think of people docking on other people in a server like discovery, it would be a programing mericle. Maybe a contest.....
The main practical flaw with this device has to do with your shield. The repair beam will not effect the hull if the shield is up (like normal weapons). You must first reduce the shield, but to do this in any amount of time reasonable for a repair during battlle (only place it would be used, otherwise everyone would just dock) requires the ability to inflict massive shield damage.
A shield killer of that magnitude is a danger to balance. Hamburg runs a fighter based mod where a normal sk can do the job no problem, large cap ships will not get off so lucky.
actually the fact that one needs to have dropped shields works. It works sorta as a balance. You can't sit there are repair the Cap ship while its hiding behind its shields.:)
If the repair gun could be done and the Negative damage thing investigated by myth busters, then we could make them LVL 6 turrets so ONLY repair ships could use them. Thus less abuse potential.
I think everything I said was said before in ancient arcane threads no long buried but I thought I would share those concepts.
this would be intriguiging, maybe make versions for all ship classes as said before?
i'd personally have every member of nova squadron switch to a ship taht has a turret and mount one (that way we can effect field repairs after a major fight, which is really the only time when it would be practical to use one, out of combat and away from harm)
