Tip: suicide immediately after fights if you lose equipment. When you respawn, you will have all your mounted items back (granted you haven't docked anywhere..)

I once stripped off everything but the SN (which was red) off a bomber and chased it to Manhattan.

sorry to say that - but thats a horrible example of good roleplay. personally, i very very much dislike people that planet/sundive cause they lost equipment. its a RP server... if you fear the repair bill - don t get into a fight. if you got into a fight, suffer the consequences and repair the ship.
thats why i would always support it when suicide or death in general left the ship with only like 10% health on all components and equipment when you respawn. - a REAL punishment for dieing since we don t "die" anyway.
i know that loosing a fight by being shot down can come cheaper than winning with half your equipment blown off - but .... are we seriously roleplaying? or just pvping.....

Some people don't have the time or inclination to rebuy all their gear. Financing such losses is ridiculously expensive, and happens all the time with bombers.
A while back I fought a red catamaran bomber in my kusari gunboat.
After about a half hour long fight, I had destroyed most of his equipment and run him out of bats/bots, and he just gave up, sat still, and said "kill me".
I obliged, but only because I knew if I didnt kill him that he would suicide somewhere, and because I needed the death message - i had a bounty for him (which I was minutes late in collecting, unfortunately).
Now, to be fair, it is somewhat in-rp for a blood dragon or any kusari pilot to suicide if they loose a fight but arent killed, it's called seppuku - ritualistic suicide after dishonoring yourself. But for most other people, it's just an OORP way to avoid a repair bill.
but its a matter of choice after all. - if i want the edge by using a cheeta thruster - my repair bill will be high , cause the thing costs 20 million base and repairs are percentual.
if i fly a bomber with a supernova, i suffer from it, cause its a 7 million equipment instead of the cheaper razor for example.
i know i can roleplay a crash landing.... on a sun/gas giant/barren moon, or if i m careful - a habitated planet even. .... funny thing i appear quickly again afterwards unharmed in a new ship.
i know its not everyone has the time to trade for the repair, but it might as well make players think more carefully what pvp is necessary and what pvp the char would avoid ( since the player would suffer a financial loss )
its a matter of gameplay vs. roleplay after all... but personally i just consider it bad forms to suicide the damage away. precious equipment requires extra care ...

Hah, i've actually done that. Back when I had my rogue gunboat pirate, bloodsail... I had just been chased over 600k around alaska by liberty patrols, ramblin the entire time that I was drunk as hell and had no clue what was going on. I get back to new york and fly into the minefield to lose the pursuers, but they get a cruiser to come in after me since it takes almost no damage from mines - so I fled towards pittsburgh hoping to lose the guys after me in the dark matter cloud.
One guy managed to catch up to me and the others used the trade lanes to get to my position quickly while that one fighter slowed me down. I RP'd out losing control and flying into the planet, and after I had 'suicided', I was rambling on in system chat about how hot it was on pittsburgh, how my ship was turned into a pile of scrap, and how I was out of rum...
That's when I actually killed off the character, deleted him and sold his equipment for cash. Overall it was some really fun RP =P
Repairbill is painful to deal with, diving a sun.. off the RP bench. There should be a middle somewhere, which I as for one have not found yet. If someone does, shoot me a PM and explain it.
