made a thread about this a while ago, but to actually make pulse weapons effect ship core energy in any meaningful way, all energy use across all capital ship equipment, would need to be divided by 10 and by 3 for fighters, at least.
the regen rates of current ship cores is way too high for this to be a meaningful endeavour.

Doable, but requires either massive overhauls of energy costs / powerplant sizes or some fiddling with shields. All pulse weapons could be made to do 1/2 - 1/4th of their damage to shields (this would require nomad / "neutral" shields to be given a type) and then do more 'raw' damage. The other option is to downsize all larger ships' cores and weapons' energy costs. The latter would probably be a fairly ridiculous amount of (manual) work.
All in all, doable, though. Finding a good balance would be somewhat tricky however.
