Yeah. Back when I did the single -> dual thing XP was still in SP1 stages and I did not get off the hook so easily. But hopefully they have made amends in this aspect later on.
Anyway, I definitely think dual core is worth a risk here. Dual core has been one of the most beautiful things in these past years. No more system hanging because one process jams and hogs all the available processor time. You can't even surf the web nowadays with single cores with the insane proc time the flash animations use.

Since you have such a big monitor, you're going so need some serious graphics beef to keep the frames coming. The 4870x2 sounds like a good idea, but make sure your case and cooling system can handle a card that runs at about the same temp as the surface of the sun.
Your right, scratch the Quad core part. Your board probably won't handle it. Although it does say it supports the Intel Extreme range. But since it doesn't mention quad core processors, I wouldn't take the risk.:(
By the way, without the 4870 X2, that screen is a waste of space
I strongly recommend you spend as much as you can on that or equivalent video card. SLI may be an option for you after all:D

That beast is like R10 000 ($1000) in South Africa... Am I getting my monies worth or is it a bit of overkill? 2 GIGS OF RAM! LMAO... the card has the same RAM as my PC!
IS there not a wiser option? I could buy a PS3 AND an Xbox for the same price!
Which card would comfortably run the latest games at nice specs without
such massive spend... or is it really worth it?

A card running the latest games at nice spec at your resolution? I think any other card would puff smoke. 30 inches dude, where not talking 19 or 22 here.
PS3 and Xbox are good (PS3 is better) although they don't run Freelancer and the latest PC games....Do they?
Technically you could go to 3GB of RAM on a 32bit (x86) Operating system, but in my opinion, its not worth the hassle or money. A 32bit OS can only effectivly register 3GB of RAM, where as a 64bit OS supports up to a massive 128GB of RAM. But that would require a full re-install.
The more you spend on a grunty beast now, the longer it will last.
If you can get the 4870 in a build by GIGABYTE, I would recommend that one.

Keeping it cool without my office sounding like an airport might be a problem...
any suggestions?
Water?
Oh boy, I'm feelin' the money pressure here:laugh:
Otherwise, do you have an air traffic control tower to spare?:D
EDIT: You can actually buy a case that is refrigerated. As C02 cooling, water and fans may be out of the question. Although if you buy the right ones, you can get some really massive fans that move a lot of air that you can't even hear with your ear right up to it.

What resolution is your monitor?

Well, just thinking about it... you might wanna see if you can get a cheap Pentium D(NOT Pentium Dual-core, very different CPU) otherwise that single-core Pentium 4 you have will choke and bottleneck the system.
If you can't, maybe a single 4870 would be a wiser option.
