I thought the same about the original Rebel Galaxy, which I avoided for years due to that reason
One of the biggest regrets of my life

only thing i know about rebel galaxy is that many people like its soundtrack and that its a space game
never has ever a game existed with a better soundtrack than rebel galaxy, it appears Outlaw will bring further variety into the dark country blues / rock theme

idk, but it's a shame indeed. I think it's mostly due to balancing issues and the fact that a small indy studio is developing it, which might not have the capacity to run servers

it truly does limit a game's potential to develop throughout the years, you simply can't bring the level of replayability into a singleplayer game that a multiplayer game (especially with RP) offers
I played the first game, it was nothing like Freelancer. Plane was fixed, and the smallest ship you could fly is pretty much a gunboat. Turret based not snub based combat.
Was fun for a while, but got a little boring, gameplay was a bit light, mission and combat basically, rubbish trade system. Factions were fairly generic.
Game studio is very small. Game looks good but it is likely light on content unfortunately. Ships look very bulky and the shooting looks fairly simplistic compared to Freelancer, none of the tricks you can pull in Freelancer like EKing, stopping on the spot etc.
And as mentioned, zero multiplayer. Not sure but also, looks like it is mostly fighter based, which is the polar opposite of the last game. Seems to also have the same merc system, where you hire a single dude to help you out. Going to take a lot more than that.

Ok so I tried this game and played for about an hour.
So far it's - as expected - Cowboy Bebop + Freelancer.
The control scheme is actually quite similar to Freelancer, as in you can use a keyboard and mouse to direct your vessel, however, so far I haven't been able to find strafing, engine kill or realistic space physics, not sure if they exist at all. So it looks more like an arcade game than a space sim, then again, I haven't tried the "space sim" option and opted to go for the "veteran" option in the difficulty selection screen.
The missions I played so far are great fun, however, the instantaneous travel function kind of makes space less alive than in the case of other space sims / arcade games. There is of course, the sublight travel option, but it's tempting not to waste time with it at all. The protagonist is so far, a likable woman, I also like the '80s space trucker feel theme of the NPCs.
The music is awesome, especially since I know most of the tracks in the game.
Still don't understand why the Epic Store thing is a problem though, is it some kind of stereotypical distrust of Chinese corporations?
Though I only played it for an hour, so far it looks like a game worth 25 euros.
The whole epic store argument is raging across the internet. Probably easier if you just google it if you can't figure out why a lot of people might be upset about it.
Personally I couldn't care less as I'm so far behind in my gaming to do list that by the time I get to playing this it'll be out on Steam and GoG anyway haha!!
I haven't played the first game as I was a bit put off by the big gunboat and cap ship play as that doesn't seem very Freelancer to me.
However this new game looks bloody good though. They've switched to fighter based play, named the main character Juno (surely a tip of the hat to FL), and those gorgeous planetary landings is a big tick for me as hardly anyone has done that since Freelancer!! Will definitely be adding this one to my Freelancer Similar games list as it has the potential to taker the number 1 spot for most similar!
This guy has done a good video review of it:
Here's some sexy screens I found:
