You could get your friend to e-mail you his account number, then you could log in to his account on your working system and see what happens.
You really need to exhaust every possible option before the admins will help, it's not their primary role. To do the account switch you both need to download freelancer account manager. Your friend can back up his account using it and send the backup file to you. You can then activate the account using FAM on your comp. This will tell us whether there is a problem with the account or your friends client or internet connection. You should also find out if your friend uses the same ISP as you. Information about his firewall, anti-virus program and router might help as well.
The server was showing, it just wouldnt load it - went to its load screen, froze up then back to the main menu. Pretty much what was happening to my friend.
Oh, and this is slightly weird.. when it does sometimes let him on the character select screen, both his characters from the normal AND USA server are showing.

Then it sounds like there's something corrupted in your friend's account, perhaps one of the server crashes caused it, who knows?
I think it's time to PM an Admin and see if they can examine the account from their end.
