Sounds like you're at least fairly smart so I'm sure roleplaying will come easy enough. As for the rules that everyone's talking about, yeah they're pretty complicated, but you'll understand them in time. Basically, two great ideas to stick by why you learn everything else:
Don't mix and match with your gear. If you have a lawful ship, mount lawful weapons. Remember though, that not everyone is friends despite their legality. Kusari and Bretonia are at war, Outcasts and Corsairs hate each other. Don't put guns of one on the ship of the other, or whatever. Basically, to be on the safe side, if you make your junker, say, get Junker ID, Junker IFF, a Junker ship and Junker weapons. It's a little more flexible than that, but it's best to start off safe and play around later.
Only fight in self defence. The combat rules are at times, really complicated. Certain things count as leaving combat, there are rules about re-engaging, etc etc. However, defending yourself is always fine, whatever the situation. You'll pick everything up within a week or two though I'm sure.
Also, get used to like 50 new systems, and 50 new bases in the old systems. Takes a long time to remember which Omega is what.

I'm glad for that gesture, at least. I think I might need some amounts of assistance in the future.
And thank you for the explanations, Benjamin.
Good rules to keep in mind. I dare say that they do make some amount of sense.
I mainly while away my time trading and mining, so the attack rules, as complicated as they are, can hopefully be left to memorize later. I am also unsure as to whether or not 50 new systems is a good thing or a bad thing.

A very good thing, I assure you. Even if you never see all of them, having more places to visit and explore keeps it interesting.
A tip: Mining works better in groups (one mining ship to mine, several transports to haul away and sell). However, in certain places solo mining can be pretty profitable if you have the right setup (tag/ID/ship/mining lasers).
I was in the same situation as you, an SP veteran starting out on Multiplayer, a few months back. Don't worry, you get used to it, its a great server.
If you're just starting out, mining Helium in Pennsylvania is a good way to geet some quick cash. Sell it for 700 credits apiece in the same system. In a Rhino, that's 157,500 in one run. Dead easy...
More importantly: Beware the Go go gadget facepalm and the falcon head desk. They roam the flood, waiting for their next victims. Also; be sure to read up on the roleplay hub topics.
