If not then mind that even VHFs lack the firepower to take down bomers easily, not to mention HF class only have acess to lvl 9 guns if I remember correctly and thier power core dries up faster than a raindrop in the Sahara, even if all of their shots land against a bomber with 40+K armor takes forever and only a mistake or two over that long period of time and they are SNACed or Mini Razored out of the skies.
VHFs dont lack firepower to kill bombers. It takes some time, sure, but with mini razor greatly speeds it up.
Same with HFs, most of them (I dont know any which couldnt) can mount mini razor too. Also, they are support fighters, not really meant to fight alone.
LFs cant kill bomber -alone-, but they are support fighters too, they are not designed to fight alone very much.
Purpose of LFs and HF is clear imo - They are support fighters for VHFs and bombers, as they can quite well keep up with target, etc.
VHFs - Meant to kill bombers or other VHFs/HFs, sometimes act as support for bombers in taking out gunboats or even cruisers (in case those caps have no escorts)
And, dont underestimate swarms of fighters, if most of them mount mini razors, they can take out gunship/boat quite well.
I fine tuned my post a bit, seems like you quoted it before I managed to finish editing. Mini Razor, fine, I guess it is a counter to everything, I am not questioning it's effectiveness it is just emberassing that the normal guns are just for show as the MR can do it better.
Also, I am not a fan of missiles/torpedoes, only used one for short time due to necessity, but might give it a chance to permamently add it to my loadout.
you can take out gunboats in just a couple of fighters with razors if you're good enough I believe. No need for a swarm, unless you're going for the kusari 'gunboat'
I just thought of somthing.. Take the second CD/Torp mount off of the bomber. That way they would need another ship to CD for them. That'd give VHFs a use, they stop the traders (or capships) so the bombers can attack them.
VHFs already have to decide between torps or CDs, why shouldn't Bombers have the same issue? It'd balance the bombers and VHFs, so VHFs have a job that they are better at than GBs (and don't use the 'VHFs are better for small-scale fights' excuse Jinx.. Unless you want to show me 1 VHF beating 1 GB..) since the GB is slower. VHF will be better at CDing small targets, whereas a GB would have a harder time.
I'm almost tempted to say GBs shouldn't have CDs either, but thats an issue for another thread.
but what "excuse" to you mean? - to be better in a small scale fight? - we ARE talking about designated roles in RP - not how they re used on our server.

... we also need to consider that in RP, house militaries order thousands of ships to be produced. - so when liberty orders 100.000 fighters - it DOES matter that the defender is some hundred thousand credits cheaper while having a good dps and protection.
for a player however - that fact is insignificant. - he ll gladly pay millions more to achieve a fraction of more protection.
From what I was able to determine based on gunboat behaviour in the SP campaign, gunboats were meant to basically complement fighters, to add some heavy firepower and to help the smaller ships coordinate, and they were capable of keeping up with fighters while cruisers and battleships were not.
I've always said that Gunboats are anti-fighter vessels, and I stick to it. The forward gun is the bash any heavy armor that tries to get in their way.
What I can't figure out yet is why our Gunboats dont impulse at 120 like the vanilla gunboats do. Obviously this means removing the thruster, which caps didn't have (and shouldn't in my opinon. Same applies to Transports.)

On that subject actually, why do caps have equipment mounts they 'shouldnt' have, like CM's, CD's, and Thrusters?
The fact that a bomber can, at present, take out a gunboat is not the point, I mean, if gunboats are supposed to be in the same class as capital ships, they do an exceptionally poor showing of it...even a cruiser can kill a battleship, using the correct tactics...how can a gunboat possibly hope to kill a cruiser with guns whose range is just over 3/4 that of it's opponent? (plus I thought the idea was that gunboats should not be able to take out cruisers?...)
Jinx classes gunboats/ships as heavier forms of VHFs...sure don't see many HFs flying around, these days, do we? (save for the Gallic ones, which don't have a VHF (oh, and I thought HFs had 5 guns?...(Falcon, Anubis, Defender...), just with a maybe-forward-facing-turret)).
The question remains not what role LFs/HFs/VHFs should have (well, not at present), but what role GBs should have...fighter killer or cap killer?
Gunboats shouldn't have a missile launcher, kinda defeats the object of the name of the ship. Remove that and we will see less gunboat spamming and when you do see one it will usually be a skilled pilot
