Quote:Mate, some of the ENGLISH speakers on this server have trouble with the language. Some people type in a manner used to represent an accent, others use big words that the kiddies at home might not understand.

HA! That is... SO true.

Anyways, I have noticed as well that some people try and type with a greater degree of intelligence than what they actually possess. And no, that wasn't an example, I'm just a nerd.

I've also noticed that alot of people try and sound like great 16th century European minds. i.e. "Indeed, sir, though I know not when such an event occured." Next I expect to hear an indescribable "Hu-buh-buh-buh!" of an overweight Victorian era lawyer objecting in a court room. Followed, of course, by "Preposterous!"

I'm sure stuff like this doesn't help with Babelfish confusion. You think THEY're messing up? You think its just Babelfish that messes up their sentences? When you're using words like Preposterous and rediculous speech patterns like the one above, thats bound to come out as something equally as confusing like "He not true yes but no knowledge when".

Think about that the next time somebody who doesn't speak English tries to communicate with you. You may be speaking as much rubbish as what they are because they're trying to make a direct response to "He not true yes but no knowledge when".

I am not a native English Speaker, so i make grammar errors.
But it annoys me when people make silly comments about that... especially brits who for the most part can't speak their own language let alone anyone elses!

Well i don't understand peoples pain here as English is my native language. I can relate to the people who make a good attempt at having a go. If someone is attempting to make some form of sentence but they have Limited use of English and it isn't the "I no speak English". I generally dumb down my english, no complicated words and very short sentences. I regard this as a courtesy to the person who is attempting to RP with me. As if i was trying to RP in another language i would have similar problems.

There is no real need to treat people badly if they are at least attempting some RP. Even if it is extremely limited.

It may help to have the rule which states it is an English speaking server translating. As then it may be possible to avoid some of the sanctions caused by a lack of understanding of the rules.

Anyways this is just my two cents on the said subject.

As RoadRunner so eloquently quoted - the rule on this server, since it IS an RP server, is to use English -ESPECIALLY in system chat. Quite honestly, I could care less what you do in your private chat groups. But when y'all are talking to me, boyos, yuse betta be usin' da Kings' Englitch...

Okay, I realize that the last sentence is a little off from normal English - but it IS English - just with assorted regional dialects. That's one thing you also have to take into consideration. Bretonians tend to speak British type English, Xeno's (give me a YeeHaw) tend to talk like American southern rednecks (we're still not sure why) - and then there's the rest of us.

I really don't have issues with people that don't speak English as their native tongue - I think it's great that they're willing to play here and learn. I DO have issues with people that, as that previous poster said, say 'leave me alone, I don't speak English' or make some posts in Cyrillic in system chat. And then who have no desire to actually speak or RP.

I'll translate the rules into French, if you wish.

Mmm... Right, another point of view scenario here.

Lets assume a Spanish dev team created the best Freelancer mod ever with the highest population density on the server. Their rule is, of course, to speak only Spanish in system chat.

Lets be honest, would you care? No, you're there for the awesome factor. Likely you'd get some friends with you to play with you and you'd roflrage in your little English group.

Thats something that really annoys me! For example, I have a Chinese teacher. Incidentally, from China. People treat her like she's stupid, because they can get away with cheating and she makes little American faux pas'. But they don't realize that she was normal in China and had everything that we had developmentally speaking. She had peers, she had tests and everything else. I'm sure she at least witnessed her fair share of cheating, but people still treat her as less intelligent.

Crikey, some of you are acting like the arrogant English speakers that make us look bad. i.e. "Learn you some English ya'll done foreign types!"

How about you learn some of their language and try to interact with them? No? Fantastic. If you aren't willing to learn and try and help them, what makes you think they'd be willing to try and communicate with you? They are no different, they just speak a different language.

And... This...
Quote:But when y'all are talking to me, boyos, yuse betta be usin' da Kings' Englitch...
Is indescribable. Englitch isn't a word - its not even a decipherable accent. Ya'll is Southern United States. Yuse is Chicago/Jersey/New York (all of those accents use it) and... Well, betta should be be'a, but "be usin' da King's English" was at least recognizable as Cockney.

Right now, Armageddon (-Edit- And Errant) seem to be the ones who best understands this level of... Understanding. Most of you have posted something commending anyone who tries and offering questionable judgements of those who ask you to leave them alone, but some of you...

Some of you do the rest of us no favors with stereotypes.

If you're not going to follow the server rules on any server, you should not be playing there. Simple as that.

As a foreign speaker, I found this thread very insulting.

You, who have English as a native language, d'you know how -hard- it is to learn a foreign language?

You can't expect us all to have a decent ability about speaking in English.

And banning a player for beign a foreign does look rude.

Can I get a 'Konnichiwa' from my brothers in the GMG?
How about a 'Bonjour' from the Gallic Brigands?

Seriously, if you're going to enforce this rule, where do we draw the line? How do we tell the difference between a German RM pilot who's using Babelfish and a Portugese KNF player who speaks english as a second language...?

I spent four years trying to learn french and all it got me was 'Je ne parle pas Francais'. I've just now started to smatter French words and phrases into my Brigand's roleplay, words like 'please' and 'have a nice day'. (also words like sacre merde, but let's leave those out of this conversation...) Do I now face sanction threats for not speaking english in system chat?

Be kinder than necessary, because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

hmmm... I wonder if the lingua franca of Disco were Spanish or Chinese or Russian, rather than English, we'd be having this discussion.... the tongue of the evil imperialists and all that:dry:

But Friday is right... much of the time, the most atrocious English spills lazily from those which have English as their first language. Bloody sad.
