Freelancer really nailed the atmosphere in terms of graphics and sound. It also featured a huge game world that's been expanded on substantially in mods like Discovery. The combat is fast and furious, and it's easy to pick up and have fun without learning a bunch of intricate controls.
On the other hand, in its vanilla incarnation Freelancer never really lived up to its title; you can take missions and trade a bit on the side, but you're still following a single-track story. On top of that, trading and doing missions got old quickly and it was basically a means to getting a Sabre/Eagle/Titan. The entire game sorta lost its appeal once you completed the campaign.
The only thing that's kept this old dinosaur alive for all these years is the modding community - without the mods, Freelancer is nothing special, even a disappointment in my eyes, considering what was promised by its developers. On the flip side, this says a LOT about the quality of Freelancer mods and how they've managed to fulfill this game's potential.
It simply boils down to personal preference. It may be that some of you guys love World of Warcraft, some may not. Maybe you're just not a fantasy person, or maybe you are?
Well, I guess everyone's different - just like nearly every game is different. Perhaps someday you'll find your perfect game-person match-up... (If you haven't already)
It's a spacesim. Those are few and far between. The good ones anyway. But there are more game that does some of the things Freelancer does, only better.
Descent Freespace has far superiour dog fights and (to me at least) story, but has no trading and isn't open-ended Elite was the first open ended space trading game, but it's from '89 or something like that and is vastly outdated in every regard.
EVE Online has more complex trading, more ships and equipment, the ability for one character to own multiple ships and has crafting. But the controls are horrid. Like, really horrid. Compare it to ONLY using F2/F3. Always. Including in combat.
Freelancer does nothing better than any of these games. But it does all of it. That's the strength of Freelancer.
But maybe that's just me
