I would like to get this game but I am an opponent of pay to play. As a working stiff who is just getting by, I can't justify spending even the $9-15/month when I have to put food on the table.
So, been playing through the open beta for the past few days and I must say, the grinding for STO seems to be about on par with grinding from other MMO games. I've enjoyed the missions thus far, and it mixes up ground and space combat so it never gets really dull.
My major complaints are:
-it's pay to play per month, but that's a given for a MMO.
-Ground combat kinda drags, the weapons could use a damage boost to make it go faster.
-You only get 3 character slots without purchasing a lifetime/12 month subscription.
-I hear that there are some PvP inequalities between the Federation and Klingons, but that is hearsay.
-Cryptic seems intent on nickle and diming everyone, not including some playable factions so that they can be part of "expansion packs" ect. Kinda annoying, but that's not confirmed, just me speculating.
Anyway, it's a fun game, it seems to be geared more towards "solo missions with the opportunity to group up" rather then "must group up" which is nice in its own way.
I'm enjoying this game, and probably will enjoy it for a while, it seems that there is a lot of content that I haven't gotten near, which bodes well for the game.

I've been leaning that way myself, but I doubt it will come out until the end of the year, if not later. To me it doesnt really matter much right now though as I dont have the cash and my comp couldnt handle either game. If you want to see ST:O in action though, Giant bomb has made videos of their first 6 hours of gameplay in the beta, with a new episode every weekday. It is accompanied by some pretty hilarious commentary as well.
I like the life time subscription factor, I've tried it out it's alright I probably won't touch it until five months in cause I won't make the same mistake I made with Age of Conan and Aion again....
