AEL, info 100%. i changed nothing, just unpacked and packed same for test.
No that's rubbish. If node names or Slot numbers are messed up it will crash. But if these Params are wrong it just won't work. So really it depends what you have messed up.
Best thing to do before you edit an ALE file is just decompile it, then recompile it and try it ingame before you edit anything. Then you know it did work before you done anything, if it dosn't you just mess around till it does.
Sorry I'm late.... Iron I had the exact same problem. And it wasn't even consistent.
Eg, I made a new particle effect (copied from a pi_particle with colour change) -- the proj worked, but flash and impact didn't. Did the same with a br_tachyon -- and nothing worked. I was tearing hair out by the handful.
Tried SilentAssassin's fix, and now everything works! You my friend are the man.
So either ALE editor or Freelancer engine is seriously frakked up. I'd say both of the above.

*makes it a point not to listen to Nico anymore* D:
The tools freelancer's dev team had for .ale editing probably made much more sense, whereas the .ALE editor has been built from the ground up. A lot of the stuff involved is random and requires sheer guesswork.
hehe, nah seriously... i aint touched the crap in ages, i cant remember what causes errors anymore... i just know they happen, and when they do i wanna throw a comp out a window w0000
