District 9 and Avatar were both great movies, whereas Avatar was just for pure sci-fi enjoyment, District 9 was a more serious movie with a stronger message behind it, though I'm sure I don't need to point out the messages from that film, since they're pretty obvious I think.

Also, I saw the version without subtitles and thought it was pretty awesome, I guess I'm glad I didn't buy it on DVD too, because it sounds like that's where the subtitles are found...

Was a really great movie though, all around, with a couple of good life-lesson type messages to be found if you paid attention.

It's an excellent film and was better than Avatar. Yes Avatar had big explosions, and characters you couldn't help but empathise with (You were supposed to, they were deliberately designed to make you do that). District 9 did this without being designed that way. District 9's ending was always something you couldn't predict, but from day 1 of the first major Avatar trailer we knew how that was going to end, after all the trailers had shown us. So that killed any mystery that film had. I'm damn glad Avatar didn't win the Best Picture Oscar, but I'm not happy with the fact The Hurt Locker did either, there were two films on the shortlist that were better in each of their genres. District 9 and Inglorious Basterds, both covered similar themes to their bigger budget counterparts, and both were better in almost every regard.

The best thing about D9 is that none of the characters came down to 2d pastiches, the only thing 3d about some of Avatars characterisations was they way they were filmed.

All in all D9 is cheaper, better and ultimately more engaging than Avatar, unless you're into weird blue cat people. If so then knock yourself out. I'll be watching shrimp.

You'l be surprised how many times the F word comes up in that film. Assign a swear word to each of your buddies and take a swig of whatever alcoholic beverage is in your hand every time your word comes up. Blotto.

Sarawr's post is pretty much same as what I would write about D9, so don't have much to add, awesome movie.

I actually like the sub version better. I saw both and the prawn became more engaging characters when you knew what they were saying.

Except at the end of the movie I kept wanting to start yelling "use the magnet bullet catcher thing you idiot!"

District 9 was one of only two movies that I thought were worth paying to watch last year. The other being Avatar.
This year looks like it'll be How to Train your Dragon and Kick Ass for me x3

I liked it how the exosuit thingy wasn't super awesomely strong, and they were actually able to kill it.

I'm with you on those two movies, Catie. (:P)

Them and Clash of the Titans.
