I've found that the Kusari explorer is actually a very intense ship to fly. May be a bit big, but it is armored as a tank. If you feel like focusing on capital ships and transports, I have had luck with a full cerb layout--just chain-fire for better than average use against fighters and bombers. If you expect more fighter/bomber resistance, you could get Battle Razors and Pulses, or perhaps 1 missile and a combination of factional gunboat turrets (Though against gunboats you will have a tough time without heavy capital armor).
I'd recommend it, despite its size. Just remember, armor and vast power.

inRP we won't.
However, I am very approachable about making ooRP tech permissions. My only requirement is for it to be reasonable and for there to be some form of role play involved with how you got it.

I disagree. The KU Explorer just has a huge powercore, nothing more.
First off, it is not a tank. Its 100k armor are only average.
Yes, it is great for Anti-Transport use, but bombers rape it. It may also have trouble fighting smaller (especially narrower) Gunboats, since the Explorer will always be outmanouvered.
Missiles suck without exception, too much lag. And a single missile is not that dangerous on its own. You'd have to spam them, however since their energy-efficiency sucks too...Please forget GB missiles.
I have experience with the Explorer: Unless you have some friends that escort you, you are a flying target practice.
From what I've seen, the Corsair GB looks very nice. Same powercore as the Explorer, more turrets and smaller shape.
However a general gunboat advice, since most players think they are invulnerable when they fly something bigger:
1. You will not kill a running fighter/bomber with it, your thrust is too slow
2. You are extremely vulnerable to ganks
Generally, a Gunboat is NOT something for a lonewolf in my opinion. Sure, pirating a single transport is easier in this thing, but once the lawfuls arrive the fun is over.

^^that....
....and I also have a pirate explorer, but I only ever use it when i'm grouped with a mix of fighters/bombers....then it serves as a decent little "flagship" for our pirate mini-fleet.
That being said, if there is any bombers in the enemy fleet, it's usually quickly downed.
Kusari Explorer: Get three GB missiles, chainfire them.
Put GB Basics on the other slots. Fighters and bombers will curse your name, and the regular guns can drop a transport's shield easy enough. Then you light into them with missiles too.

Actually, the damage output of 4 Basics is not that great, a bomber/fighter would have to be really stupid to let himself be deshielded by it, let alone take serious hull damage. Additionally, it takes ages to take down 100k of Transport shields with 4 Basics.

I don't hang around when I finish up with the guy.:P
In my opinion a corsair has the most freedom- Yet again I'd have to say (as well) that a gunboat is not really well... Safe to pirate in. A bomber can- Go in, kill, leave and still have a chance to aviod being killed.
With that being said I would recommend you forget your gunboat idea and go for a bomber. If you want to be free- Go for a Roc with a pirate ID (downside- SNAC only every 10.5 seconds) or a warran with a much better powercore.
If you want to be with a faction with a large ZOI- Corsairs seems to have it good. (Rheinland, Bretonia (dubblin esp'), Sigmas and sometimes going up into Kusari even.
