Oh, well, when it comes to a large battle you'll love how sharp Threster is. You can dodge battleships like nothing. I don't own the ship itself, but I've seen it, and what it can do. 2 cerbs + 6 basics and you won't have many problems against other cruisers after some training, change basics for solaris and you got an OP GB killing machine.

Hatchet is still possible to solo/mortally wound by a lone bomber.... It is purely anti cap-vise that this thing owns (impossible to hit from 600m away while it can lob mortars at you all day long).... Kusari Dessy, unless the backwards firepower was fixed, is a joke...
And let's not forget the massive CORE raid in zeta right after it.And the CORE sieges on Murilo and Nomad sieges in Lost:P...and plenty of other stuff
Now to the OP, I support the idea of taking a thresher, I pilot one as well, 1 LM, 1 Missile and full solarises and it's awesome.I can act as a support role against caps and easily keep snubs away. And it's agility won't dissapoint you.
You can basically equip it for any role you would want

Hatchet has 8 class-6 turrets and 1 class-7 heavy, while Thresher has 6 class-6 turrets and 2 class-7 heavies. The extra 2 light turrets on the Hatchet can be used for prims if you are willing to run out the core, or you can use them for support weapons such as pulses. Thresher cannot match the light turret output, however it does have the 2 heavies, unfortunately it can't really fire both of the class-7 mounts simultaneously (its possible but not common setup), so its an option to use one of those to hold a class-6 turret if you are willing to give up the slot.
Thresher can fire all of them backwards, while Hatchet cannot. This is very important if you are fighting something thats sucking on your exhaust.
The centered slots on the kudessie are easier to aim and snipe--I've sniped bombers with an LM before. The thresher slots are not bad, but the ship profile can block the weapons in some cases (such as firing while turning).
Hatchet feels more nimble, dunno if it is or not.
Actually, a hatchet loaded with primaries and a cerberus can fire nonstop without really having any power core issues.
Also, a thresher actually can fire both heavies, when equipped with two cerberus, and BHG cruiser turrets, which actually gives it a very good damage output, and all of the guns can fire pretty accurately forwards without any issues with your power core.
You are right about the thresher's ability to fire backwards; this is the main thing that sets it apart from the hatchet.
Hatchet does indeed turn faster, but only slightly faster. It only takes about one less second to turn in a full circle than the thresher; it's mainly just the smaller size of the hatchet that makes it feel so quick.
Now, a comparison of the two: Both ships are small and fast. Both ships can have good firepower for there size, since their weapon mount placement and small ship size give them accuracy allowing all of their turrets to easily hit their target, with every shot, and your real damage is determined by how much you can hit, not by how much you can shoot.
What does the thresher have going for it? It's got more firepower. Even though it has less total guns, the extra cerberus gives it more total firepower than the hatchet has, even forwards. Since flying towards a battleship with such a small ship is not one of the world's safest battle strategies, you will usually be firing sideways or backwards at your enemies. On the hatchet, this narrows you down to only two primaries and a cerberus, while the thresher can shoot most of its guns at every angle, giving it twice the damage output of a hatchet. Against bombers, the thresher is still small enough to easily evade torpedos, and it can cover its flanks more easily. Even with BHG primaries, rather than solaris, the thresher can still easily swat bombers out of the sky.
What does the hatchet have going for it? It's slightly faster, and a lot smaller. While the thresher is pretty small, the thresher is still large enough that any decent pilot won't miss a shot on it. The hatchet is just barely small enough to make most pilots miss most of their shots. Against cruisers or smaller, the hatchet is able to face them to use all of its firepower, while still being smaller, making it usually have the advantage. Against capital ships, the hatchet is usually limited to only its cerberus and a couple of primaries, but even this small amount of firepower can be enough.
Which do I prefer? Definitely the hatchet, but the thresher is still good. I'm just a gunboat-lover myself, and the hatchet is small enough to satisfy that role.
Little follow up after some more time and thinking. Preference is for the hatchet. Slightly better agility and abundance of prims make it better for killing gunboats. For larger ships (ie Storta and such) the better agility makes evasion easier, and the center LM is easy to aim without having to switch weapon groups or turn the ship sideways. Thresher has slightly better armor, and you can put a cerb on it, but I'd rather wriggle than take the hits. Cruiser fire is slow enough for a light dessie to evade.
