^^I think every thread could benefit from some more of this.
I have to agree with being against this though. My view is that "using a gas cloud to your advantage" is not the same as being immune to it's affects, it should be about the pilots skill in using his environment. In fact as far as I am concerned making them immune would counteract the lore. GMG pilots could just turn tail, run into a gas cloud and be unfollowable in a straight line with no gas cloud piloting skills at all.
I know when I take my HF into an asteroid field the environmental limitations is what keeps the VHFs from getting their guns on me and allows me to make strafing runs from cover. Similar tactics could be used in a gas field....and yes its more dangerous, which is why if used correctly it could be a more deadly weapon.

A very substantial +1 to this. In addition, I feel that should extend to radiation damage and other environmental hazards as well. This would then, in turn, let the devs actually use those hazards effectively. Right now, creating a very damaging radiation field simply destroys snubs, while leaving capitals almost entirely unharmed. Creating one that harms capitals as well would simply render snubcraft unusable.
So yeah. I'm all for this. It'd make fighting in those clouds actually be a feasible way of dealing with larger ships both in lore and in the game. Snubs could actually avoid the gas pockets (although that's very tricky to do, it's possible - it'd be a larger challenge in combat than the fight itself, though ), while capitals would be ripped apart if they went too far into them.

I agree with you, An'shur, this proposed game mechanic would be broken and imbalanced from the start.
I've got to say though, making enviromental hazards even more dangerous for especially larger ships would be a good thing. As it is now, gas pockets are catastrophic for snubs to fight in against transports and bigger ships (apart from the Barge, perhaps). The clouds are broken, and severly favor the bigger ships (bigger ship ie more powerful shields).
It's not impossible to fight off several snubs facing just your transport when you've got a cloud of gas pockets nearby. I ought to know, fighting and winning against five bombers and fighters at the same time with a battle-kitted Behemoth, exploiting the gas pockets in my favor. (Mind, this was prior to turret steering/zooming.)
And as I said earlier, there's also established vanilla lore backing this up. Is it actually possible to implement this ingame? I don't know, but I would certainly like to find out.
