One bomber can very easily take on a gunboat. I personally have taken on a gunboat plus its escort (usually another bomber) in a bomber myself and won, so the gunboat is really very ineffective against bombers.
I'd like to say, a lone bomber v a lone Gunboat, with pilots of equal skill, the Gunboat will win, hands down. If you can CD a GBs Ekill and stay behind it, and it doesn't recognize that you do that and go into a defensive turret mode, then, yes, you can beat it, however, fighting a lone Gunboat in a lone Bomber is very hard to do when both pilots are adequate at their roles. This is because the SN recharges slower than the shield regeneration of the Gunboat, and if one mounts a razor instead of a

Meet my Hussar, please. :P
A Light Fighter can kill a bomber, however, it takes intuition and skill, as well. You have to know when to turn, when you can shoot, and all that jive. With perseverance, it isn't bad, but it takes a while...
' Wrote:I just thought of somthing.. Take the second CD/Torp mount off of the bomber. That way they would need another ship to CD for them. That'd give VHFs a use, they stop the traders (or capships) so the bombers can attack them.
VHFs already have to decide between torps or CDs, why shouldn't Bombers have the same issue? It'd balance the bombers and VHFs, so VHFs have a job that they are better at than GBs (and don't use the 'VHFs are better for small-scale fights' excuse Jinx.. Unless you want to show me 1 VHF beating 1 GB..) since the GB is slower. VHF will be better at CDing small targets, whereas a GB would have a harder time.
I'm almost tempted to say GBs shouldn't have CDs either, but thats an issue for another thread.
This could work. It would balance out bombers as well, in a way.

if anyone would like a demenstation of fighter power, bring a corsair gunboat to cambridge. allow the BAF to bring three VHF's, we will rape you. even if we only have one mini razer.
really, gunboats are pretty bad against swarms.

Perhaps you should call your bomber escorts?... mmm... makes sense doesnt it?
I did read the first post, but really be reasonable. Bring more bombers, or bring less battles...
Oh yeah, by the way, the "Intended role" idea completely defeats the purpose of the word "Freelancer"
It used to be the weapons you put on your ship, it was the role it did best, Hell, you could even make an Anti Fighter battleship if you wanted to, but you would fail against caps. Anti-Cap gunboats are still frequent.
There ARE "intended roles" but at least let the player choose.
Battleships > All caps
Cruisers > BS (in numbers) Bombers, ect.
Gunboats > Anti-Bomber & Fighter
All of these are subject to change by the player who load outs the ship, And i hope to Valhallah it stays that way...
The word "freelancer" has nothing to do with ship balance roles.
Gunboats are good against bombers, however I have noticed they're difficult to use in larger fights. Ie, a single gunboat and cap support versus 5 bombers, the gunboat escort would be in serious trouble. When the numbers are more even, or its a solo gunboat vs 1-3 bombers, the fights are much more likely to be won by the gunboat side. Another way to improve gunboat survivability in group fights is to escort them. It may sound silly, escorting an anti strikecraft escort with fighters, but it works. Fighters and gunboats both bring different things to a fight - gunboats have the toughness and ability to instantly kill bombers and fighters, while fighters can stay on a bomber's tail and prevent it from effectively bombing its targets.
Another tip: fly slow gunboats differently to agile gunboats - you won't necessarily outturn the bomber, but you can still bring your turrets to bear on them.
Intended role, from the SP is to be a long range support/recon/strike vessal to go in with the fighters/bombers.
Disco role? anti small craft. Wouldent be such of a problem, but has anyone noticed gb forward guns cant even DENT a cruiser sheild? it takes at least 3 anti cap armed gb to kill a anti fighter armed cruiser, then theres somthing wrong, wasnt the POINT to make them no longer jack of all trades? well, that only works if their "specialist" guns dont suck to the high hills.

I can't tell you how wrong this is. A guy I know in the LPI is insane in his Liberator, and I've seen him solo four bombers at once. It takes a long time with only two Vengeances for hull, and he doesn't use Nukes or Rippers (though he does CD their nukes sometimes).
LFs are a completely different class of ship to HF and VHF, but most people try to fly them the same way. That is where they go wrong, and that is where they end up getting nuked. Hell, mount four Magma Hammers on a Liberator, combined with a Screamer I can see it soloing Gunboats.
