Other than the issue Eppy presented, there's not much other reason to have such a ship any more, and if that's the case it doesn't need to have defenses, or any fighter equipment. Just make sure it has enough cargo to deliver cap 8 armour.
That's just as viable an option. Even if it has a single mount only for each weapon type and no power to really fire them it still accomplishes the goal. other suggestions were to give the player using it some options for creativity.
Well then Tinkerbell, I've had an idea where some gunboats would have a few cruiser guns, and all battleships would have cruiser and gunboat mounts aswell,.... cruisers naturaly cruiser and gb guns.
To have all guns interchangable for massive loadout experimentation. Such a ship would be most welcome, I'd have one in an instant, and most ships should be made more like it... just imagine a freighter with a single cruiser turret... should be awesome fun, if such a ship had a poor enough powerplant to not hurt big targets (unless you got say 5 freighters with cruiser guns)

The core idea was a gun transporter for groups that supply weapons or use weapons from multiple factions. A Zoner could use it as a delivery service. Junkers could use it. There are others as well.
The fireable gun part was for the ship owner. Its no fun to have a ship that can only "simulate" activity and allowing a meager loadout that can be fired let's the tender player also serve as an escort or even decoy ship--not to mention have a small chance of defending himself. A transport shield and the loadout suggested him places him pretty on par with the Salvager. Not a radical difference.
Players who like "gun running" would especially be interested in this.
I think this idea has merit as its another RP element to the game which makes sense.
Though im unsure about it having guns.
I feel its the same arguement used against giving the Whale any weapons. Those people who fly them want guns as its dull not being able to shoot at anything. However, such a massive cargo ship shouldnt travel alone, it should be guarded. If its not guarded, its the fault of the faction who owns it for not supplying escorts or the pilot for not hiring some not the devs. Similar thing for this. You wouldnt, or shouldnt send anything to go pick up supplies for cap ships without some form of guard.
It solves a problem that people keep mentioning about flying cap ships around just to change out one gun but im unsure of the need for it to mount them. If it could be made to just carry them, thatd serve its purpose. As JihadJoe said, being blown up is the risk you take trading/transporting anything, guns shouldnt be any different.

Shouldnt be able to fire them. Get an escort.
