I have used unconventional names before for my characters for a couple reasons, but mainly because I like trying something new for a change. For example, I named my Hacker char. (who later became an Outcast) "Black.Hat" which can be slang for a hacker or a criminal (not too sure about that though.

In my opinion, as long as people stay away from using leet terms, random capital letters, etc. Aka if you have a some kind of decent reason behind a name like "Carrot" then you should be fine.

i think you get the general idea, people write such names on their boats, its just diffirent if its a company or military ship that has to follow a certain naming pattern.

Your viewpoint, while semi valid is a quite shortsighted.
Ask yourself "Why are they the named as such?"
Then ask ,"if they are indeed ridiculously (or "noobly") named, can I have some fun with it?"
"Is there some way I can taunt this person into some other RP?"

For example, what is Finnigans.Wake. Or Addy.
Tombstone. Carrot. Carrotcake. 5up3rm4n?

If you find their names dis-satisfactory, then why don't YOU make up a story about their names?
When you say "names have to be a certain way" then you are forcing your RP viewpoint on others.

I think you have a point. Having some stupid name like Fudge.Packer is ok I guess, you could have your reasons, but when I see people with totally incoherent, symbols-put-together, clan-reject names like this:

i knew a cop one who had chicks cover their breasts in paint and make marks on his car, so even a lawful should be able to do something stupid with his ship:D
