Riiight, after some careful digging amongst several FL forums, it seams that "Beams" have been duplicated by using fast refire rate weapons, and add long projectiles. But no real long beams...

I've tried making beam weapons before. The result is a weapon which either deals an incredible amount of damage in a short space of time, or drains energy extremely quickly. It is not a practicle weapon to balance, even at 20 damage per shot it is still very over powered.
What if, in theory you make it | 20 Damage on shields and 2 damage on hull. That way it would be more balanced, and then make it draw allot of power making it sort of a "In case of emergency" like weapon;)
Much like the Victory Destroyer's main guns (Babylon 5), they take so much energy they drain the ship fully once fired, leaving the ship dead in space for a minute.
This way, it would make for an AWESOME weapon, but would mean a high risk afterwards..

It'd have to be a pulse weapon. As far as I'm aware, only pulse cannons are capable of having a shield damage value higher than it's hull damage value. Just an FYI if you're gonna try it out.
Pulse is a generic weapon type, no different from particle or laser. The shield damage comes from the shield damage value being defined, rather than set to 0 and left to the minimum multiplier from hull damage (x.5, although it's easily changeable). You may note that gunboat missiles have a specific value for their shield damage that is not related to their hull damage.

Hell, on one occasion an angry italian farmer shot an american jet with a shotgun in the late 70s or early 80s, of coruse he'd been a resistence member during ww2 and shot down luftwaffe planes to boot, so he had experince.

IE: the speed/range/projectilelife/projectilelength are all the same. So it exists as a 'beam' for a brief period of time.
