If indies keep up the good work they can never be "punished" by the officials, so to speak. For instance, Cerberus had some little "problems" with the official Order faction, but as our RP evolved, we attracted many eyes and lots of positive impressions. If indies really want to enjoy the game without carrying of the server rules, they can go for the other nonRP servers, like the DoD, or the "Relaxed RP" ones.
Thing is... if indies respect the rules and have a decent RP with the officials, there wouldn't appear any problems.

I'm all indie (ignore my Order| char, its a trial char. I could say my opinion of why, but I'm being nice) and so far, people know me and dont mind me.
Oncr I had someone say they looked forward to RP'n with me.
Also, with my indie seige, I had a humorus and, awkward RP with some AICore vessels.
Dont complain, just RP with them as you can. They'll warm up to you.

Most of the time, however it is true that some peoples perspective can be exaggerated.
For instance I have to say the majority of indies I have met have been fine no matter what faction they represent.
But I have heard comments from others citing numbers from 50% all the way up to 90% of indies being lolwuts.
I don't think it is possible but does show how they view indies.
Official Factions are just collections of indies who are trusted to set the bar and be a good example for their NPC Faction. For this, they are trusted with a few perks to help control the players who don't want to play nice etc.

I also never met so many lolwuts indies, but maybe they are making a mistake and are looking on the newbies from Pennsylvenia, some of them may be lolwuts, but hell... they are beginners !

They wish to fly around in any ship and simply have fun for their own sake without being bound to odd non-server rules and regulations the official factions tend to make.
so true:)
when i was pirating in dublin, a battleship was siting there getting moaned at by offical baf a ensign i belive for wasting fuel and told him to move...and when he didnt he got attacked...which then the ensign got blown to peicies...was rather funny to watch lol
to me a offical fraction is a group of indes with skype no more no less hence why im getting skype and a mic soon so you can all hear my dead awful voice muhahaha
I asked myself the same when I was still an Indy. It felt like there was a huge division between the "real" players and the "newbie indians". It motivated me to get into a faction as soon as I could and - gladly - I was offered the chance.
I think it is fine for player factions to use the indies as a "pool" to recruit their members from.
I'd also say that this can only work satisfactory for both sides involved, when aid is offered to those not yet up to joining a faction (e.g. because of rule issues like ships, ID problems, IFF stuff or other newbie issues).
So it's a faction's job to help the indies. And not treat them as second class. And many factions I know try hard. Perhaps... just ask someone of the faction you'd like to be in directly. It might get you where you want to get.
I'm a indie...I asked |sails yestaday if i could come with them to Eta and they said Yes but switch to your bomber which i did...I had fun and were well organized. I would roll with them again if they let me, give's me the chance to build my character and hopefully get known.
Indies are not the problem. Lolwut indies are.
But people just focus on the fact that "Olol he's an indie" instead of "Olol he's a 11 years old child who can't speak English and who couldn't care less about the rules."
after what i have seen, i'm not giving people the benefit of a doubt until someone i know tells me, that they can play nice, OR I EXPERIENCE IT PERSONALLY
gamma, minor, new york, all major mining fields... i saw combinations of ship / equipment / id / iff, i would never even dream of. unless i see you can work with your tools, i'm not accepting you as an equal. elitist? maybe. but i like the word 'cautious' better.
