i am afraid hone you think too idealistically- if there was a freelancer id like that...you would need players that respect each other, care for the fun of others, are here for rp and meaningful pvp and don't treat others like doormats, have personal grudges or are just lulzing around due to the anonymity of the internet...
i am afraid..the rules are there for a good reason and i don't think there is actually a chance to get only players on their best behavior on the server,
I agree with Rodnas on that one, sadly the factions have also some bad people in, so if the Devs kill the today indie´faction IDs the server would only suffer from it, however giving some small in-game perks for factions wont hurt much. People tend to prize totally stupid stuff that have not real in-game( understand PvP) advantage like unique ships for example.
I made countless topics about it but as it seems none of the dev/admin team wants to change anything.

At the other hand there's faction players who act like asshats and give official factions a bad name.
The difference is , official faction players can be corrected if they show bad behaviour.
Indies don't have any responsibility's as Rodnas mentioned , that's why I think official factions should get more tools to deal with those cases.
Basically, I agree with this. ^^^^
As one of the leaders of the [LN] player faction, I see good and bad behavior from indies and official faction members regularly.
When one of mine, that is, an [LN] member, behaves in a way that is really not great, and it's brought to my attention, I generally try and correct this by speaking to the person in question, generally, within an official faction that has 'effective leadership', problems can be ended through communicating with people and making sure they know right from wrong.
With indies though, many seem to think that when an official faction member tries to "Give orders" to them, or get them to act in a way that makes sense for whatever ID they're flying with, that the official faction member is "being a jerk", and while that may be accurate sometimes, it usually isn't.
ON THE OTHER HAND, there are also indies out there who don't need too much direction/and or know how to work with official factions and act in a sensible manner.
Anyway onto the original point of this thread:
Lea, I'm not sure what you were trying to illustrate w/comparing indie activity to official faction activity. *shrugs*
Well obviously there is something wrong with the current system when the said official factions that are labelled by admins/devs to be RP carriers and main disco lore creators are around 1/10 of the server population.
It rises the important question:
Why this 1/10 should have the right to shape the lore and the future of the RP world in discovery when it is minority?
In my personal vision healthy system is 50/50 or something around it. As I said in numerous previous topics about the same thing, there are simple and easy to implement bonuses for the officials that can guarantee the said 50/50 situation without harming the indie gameplay at all. Giving official factions more fresh toys with severe punishments if they abuse the toys would work quite fine.
Here we go: http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=63307 http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=77482
Both topics give bunch of good ideas how to solve this problem.

This thread alongside all the discussion in it is pretty pointless. It's nothing we haven't seen before; it always turns into this 'Official factions need more shiny crap to attract players' argument with a handful of people going 'nuuu keep Freelancer free!'
By now folks like Govedo are already angrily hitting the reply button to call me any number of unsavoury things. Troll, asshat, hatemonger, Nazi - doesn't matter. I think everyone getting stuck in this conversational loop is missing the entire point of this server.
Roleplay.
This server is about roleplay. Y'know, playing a character, developing them, shaping them based on their experiences and all of that. It's not about which faction has the fancy toys and who has all the power. It's about roleplaying. I see everyone whine and moan about factions instead of getting to the cream of the game, and it's a little disturbing.
Furthermore, before I did drop the game, I noticed a trend amongst a few official factions which more or less said 'Screw indies, time for intrafaction RP'. Basically ignored everything that wasn't a) their friends OOC or b) in their faction, even going as far as to do this bogus preplanned 'roleplay' ignorant of everybody else in the region.
Really I'm not seeing many officials as deserving of more. :>
EDIT: Factions shouldn't be some entity above and beyond people. sucking up resources. Factions should only exist if they improve things - and if they don't, people can and will go indie.
