I'm just wondering, if this will wipe all factions clean too? I could care less about my ships, but all the work I put into WA starting up would be gone.

It'll make everyone much poorer. No argument from me there.... but think about how hard it'll be to buy those cap ships, fantastic weapons and faction tags. That'll mean *ALOT* more missions, and time, to build up cash.
It will vitually guarentee every char will be aligned, ie. not neutral, if you have to raise money primarily by missions rather than trading.

Actually, I think that as long as the commodity prices don't change I won't need to have my outcast, phantom or ELF characters doing trade runs.
I've gotten fed up with switching accounts so I'm gonna stick with one account after the wipe, though I've just got to decide which characters to restart and which to leave.
And yes skaldi, ALL characters will be deleted in a wipe.
All factions will have to same problem, your not gonna be alone in having to rebuilt.
A player wipe would be interesting I think, everyone back to zip.
Making missions more profitable than trading...well I think that might get a bit dull personally. In a Sabre I can earn 20 mil in about 8 or so hours of constant missions.
That is, missions that you've done before, again and again and again. I had enough of it eventually and got myself a train and started trading, and making that 20 mil in half the time with random encounters with NPCs along the way keeps it interesting.
So I like my trading thank you very much. ;) As for removing cruise engines, Id have to say no to that. You have to think that beyond travel, the cruise engines serve in other ways, including fleeing NPCs as well as transitions between tradelanes and planets and nearby bases.
I can understand greatly how people feel about 'trading being too easy' and in honesty, it is. I think that trading should be RISKIER. It shouldn't be run of the mill 'Oh I can go into dangerous Edgeworlds and not worry', but I cant say I agree with it being less profitable. Making higher value traderoutes up to 10x more dangerous, either by reducing the train's shields and armor or increasing the amount of NPC hostilities.
Thats my opinion though, because either way, you're still going to have people who will grind for their battleship, cruiser, whatever in two weeks and itll be the same old thing, whether through missions or trading, it will happen anyways.
I personnally think there needs to be something that makes you *work* for your ship. For example, for your character to fly a Zoner Juggernaught, you would need to get a Zoner ID, and a Zoner Tag. With the reputation fixes coming in 1.481, doubless earning a reputation with the faction you want wont come easy.

From everything I can piece together, it's got something to do with our upgrade paths. We've done *ZERO* player whipes since i took over control of the server. None. absolutely NONE.
I have five people on my contact list (MSN) that have been running 4.80 with ZERO problems, and they never upgraded. However, one of them did an upgrade and experiences the *SAME* problems as we are having, so the problem isn't server related or specific to us. It's gotta do with the mod and what we changed.
Several high-profile servers all say that when you do major changes, like a x.x0 release, do a player whipe to ensure server stability.
We'll do the stimulated one during beta testing. If server load works out during the 2 weeks of beta test, we'll leave it as-is. if there's no change, we'll restore the old databases.

as long as your right, your gonna look stupid AND people are gonna be very annoyed if the problem persists and they have no chars :) not that im saying it will, this is an IF.
Teaboy, that's why they are going to test it first :P a simulated player wipe first

From my ( short ) time here I think Discovery is a great mod. There are some aspects to it, though, most already mentioned in this thread. The Train ( transports, liners etc ) shields and armor are way too high ... defining "too high" as that which gives them capabilities they shouldn't logically have. They are essentially invunerable to NPCs. I'd suggest much lower shield and armor, but more capacity to carry bats and nanos -- then there would be a financial disadvantage to taking an unescorted transport into hostile areas.
Battleships etc. are great, everybody wants one, naturally enough. But it seems that is all players care about -- trading and trading to get that ship they want -- which means that RP gets ignored, as well as the interest and potential of lower ship classes. One possibility is to restrict owership of battleships to clan or faction leaders. For example, you want a Liberty DreadNought, you must either join that player faction and achieve the top rank ( or start the faction / clan, if it doesn't exist. "Liberty Navy" or whatever ); and each faction can only have an agreed upon number of battleships. A player in a unregistered battleship would be KOS for everybody ( or fined, or whatever is decided on ).
We won't be restricting battleships to factions, that much I'm sure of. The server is made to offer freedom of ships and most equipment.
Though, want your wrong about is the lack of RP. Almost all of the server RPs. Heck, I have NO characters that don't RP, and half of mine were made for the sole purpose of RP, such as the Wraith squadron of the Bundschuh, the Private-Yacht-Vidius, and a few others. Most other people do the same. We RP in those characters all the time as well. Most of those that do, also do RP-talk, where they talk as the character in system chat, using *, ( ), and other icons to simulate when they are talking OOC.

Hi Dab,
Yes, it's always difficult to phrase a comment to avoid it seeming like a criticism to somebody.
I personally think that your ship is part of your "role". It doesn't make much sense to be totally neutral, an unaligned trader / freelancer, but to fly a well armed Rhineland battleship. It also doesn't make sense for other players to ignore it; a foreign BS showing up in your system should be a major concern, to say the least. No, I'm not talking about you in particular, this is just what I often see on the server.
Roleplay, yep, great, but nearly every pilot interaction I've had was "can you transfer $$$ for me?" or "where can I buy a battleship?". This is a natural consequence of the situation : easy trade routes, invunerable traders, cap ships available to all -- pilots just trade to get a "cool" ship. Dude.
Further suggestions, along the same lines. Make battleships ultra-expensive, essentially impossible to buy for any individual pilot. The admins give recognized faction / clan leaders enough money to buy and outfit the appropriate number of BS's. The leaders decide which pilots deserve them -- for whatever reasons makes sense in their particular organization, but generally according to rank. The advantages of this are that faction leaders actually have real power; and that pilots have to play along in their role in order to get their ships.
