Another idea, we could incorporate another FPS into Freelancer, changing the models, weapons and some maps perhaps. I think it could be done, so when you land for example, it switches for antoher .exe file, not stopping the game.
Wow,if this was possible,it'd be great. But most probably a pain to code.
I think the idea of UT04 is good since it's cheap and requires low comp-specs,but I wonder if the fast-pace of the game suits FL spirit...Well,it may change according to the mods,I don't know much about it.

The ONLY ground combat that would really happen would be between invasion forces or raiding parties etc, which doesn't happen every day.
So the simplest, and easiest, solution is to find another game that two sides of the RP event can fight it out in on the ground etc.

i agree with this (no programming or moding needed initially), however if it was made into a reqular event you could create a mod for UT04 called freelancer which could be updated as people submit their own character models to be added to the game, for e.g. if your character is part robot you could create a model with robotic arms or whatever, you can do it anyway but if everyone isn't running the same mod then to them your char will look like a standard UT guy. i don't know much about modding myself but a friend of mine used to be obsessed with the game and made many character models such as futurama characters and star-wars characters so it can be done... if people wanted.
Of course though if a team wins would they gain control of a station? i've seen this done in other mods (stations switching hands) but that was as the result of combat in the freelancer game. I'm not sure people would be happy about loosing control of a base not because of their lack of freelancer piloting skills but because of their lack of UT FPS skils. That said the base storming could be done after a space battle for the station has already been lost? but then the attackers would be annoyed that they didn't capture the station cos of lack of UT skills rather than FL skills, im gonna stop now. thoughts? anyone read this far?
If you'd really want to go for a game to mod, I'd STRONGLY advise you to go for Half Life 2 (or rather, the Source Engine). With the source SDK, it's much easier to mod than UT, and map making isn't all that difficult either, and it costs about as much as UT2k4 nowadays I think.
.....Programming a FPS out of scratch is Bullsh*t. This could be done if we had the..........SOURCE COOODE. But we don't. So I recommend we go with an old FPS, like Elite Force, or SOMETHING that will run on my crappy gaming XP.

There will no doubt, be no other game linked to this server, other than Freelancer.
And battles for planet/station ownership sure as hell won't be decided by a bunch of people getting together and fighting it out.
And if this was not clear enough, I personally promise nothing will come of "FPS Freelancer", so keep the topic well... on topic.

Battlefield 1942 would be perfect for the FL mod since there are control points to capture, which could represent key places in bases(bar, landing pad, equipment dealer, commodity dealer, ship dealer). And theres a program which allows easy map making for 1942, called Battlecraft 1942.
